Best Summer activities to enjoy in Velddrif and Surrounds

The humble, yet endlessly beautiful West Coast town of Velddrif is famously a fishing village, known and loved for its ‘bokkoms’ (dried fish), natural beauty and of course, its close proximity to the majestic Berg River.

This quaint fishing village has all the charm as befits your classic Western Cape coastal town – but with the added bonus of having some fun summer activities to savour too!

In this post, we look at the best summer activities to enjoy in Velddrif and surrounds:

1) Try Some ‘Bokkoms’ and Other Local Cuisine

While Velddrif is famous for its ‘bokkoms’ (a special kind of dried biltong and a West Coast delicacy) – Velddrif is also home to some lovely eateries, where visitors and locals can enjoy a range of other local food offerings.

Try spots like Charlie’s Brewhouse, Die Rivieria Hotel and Chalet’s Restaurant, Teyana’s Restaurant or Zeezicht Family Restaurant for a mix of everything from beer and gourmet pizzas to tasty sandwiches, dessert, cocktails and yes, you guessed it: seafood too.

2) Engage in Some Water-based Fun

The West Coast is loved for its long, sandy beaches and there are plenty to enjoy around Velddrif, including in nearby Dwarkersbos and Langebaan.

Some other popular, water-based activities in Velddrif and surrounds include canoeing, kayaking, boat cruises and stand-up paddleboarding on the vast Berg River – or surfing, kitesurfing and other beach fun at Dwarskersbos Beach.

Another unmissable attraction in Velddrif is Port Owen, a port with a beautiful, man-made marina and a lively yacht club.

Lastly, we have Laaiplek, Harbour, which, aside from its beauty, is also an ideal spot to engage in some birdwatching.

Velddrif is home to wonderful, rich birdlife and happily, Laaiplek Harbour offers several easily accessible viewing points.

It is also a great spot to head to watch or partake in some local fishing.

3) Visit Some Outdoor Attractions

When visiting or staying in Velddrif, there are several local reserves and outdoor attractions for the whole family to enjoy in the surrounding West Coast region.

These include the likes of Rocherpan, Bokkomlaan (where the ‘bokkoms’ are famously dried), Rooibaai and Draaihoek Private Nature Reserve. Some of these are located a short drive from Velddrif but are well-worth visiting!

Best of all, each of these local outdoor attractions are also excellent birding spots, blessed with lovely scenery to boot! This means they are all the perfect way to experience the calm and tranquillity of Velddrif and the stunning West Coast.
