A Wildlife Sanctuary and Africa’s Largest Bird Park

Tucked away in Hout Bay, World of Birds is Africa’s largest bird park, home to some 3000 birds or more. Beyond this, it is also a safe haven for monkeys and other small animals. This, in turn, makes it a fascinating Hout Bay attraction and a truly international destination that attracts some 100 000 visitors annually.

Here, you can discover some 400 different bird species, which are uniquely showcased across more than a hundred beautiful, spacious walk-through aviaries, cleverly designed to bring you as close to nature as possible.

Furthermore, its tropical garden setting within the verdant Hout Bay Valley lends the perfect natural environment, while also providing a majestic backdrop, thanks to its views of Table Mountain from behind, the Twelve Apostles mountain range, iconic Chapman’s Peak, Little Lion’s Head and even Constantiaberg.

World of Birds is a nature lover’s paradise but it is also a wonderful place for visiting families (especially those with kids), school groups, tourists and of course, photographers and birdwatchers to visit.

More than this, though, World of Birds is a true Cape Town icon and popular local attraction that has stood the test of time and, in the process, done incredible work for the birds and animals it protects and shelters.

What You Need to Know

Beyond the birds, World of Birds offers access to some thirty-eight New World monkeys and a variety of mammals and reptiles.

There is also a charming, yet simple on-site cafe, The Hornbill Café, which is ideal for refreshments and light meals during or after you have covered this four-hectare stretch of paradise.

Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own picnic and enjoy a feast at the Flamingo Terrace near some proud feathery friends: the flamingos.

For your visit, it’s important to know that this amazing bird park is open 365 days a year, between 9am and 5pm daily, with last entry at 4pm.

Note: You can also visit the monkey jungle during selected time slots or time your outing for the bird feeding times and see the likes of penguins, cormorants, birds of prey and other beautiful birds feeding. (For precise feeding time slots, please browse the World of Birds’ handy website.)
