Summertime in the Western Cape is the perfect time to enjoy a wonderful picnic in the beautiful outdoors. With balmy temperatures, sunny skies and gorgeous scenery, there are few things more lovely than a summer picnic in the Cape!

Whether you pack your own picnic or enjoy a fully prepared one from a wine farm or local picnic company (like Protea Picnics or Dial-a-Picnic), the options are endless.

In this post, we share some great picnic spots for summer in the Western Cape:

Cape Point: Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif

Cape Point Nature Reserve might seem like an unlikely place for a picnic but it’s actually an incredibly popular spot to picnic year-round!

While you do have to pay an entry fee to enter the reserve, you can picnic for free at one of two picnic spots, Buffels Bay or Bordjiesdrif. Both spots double as braai- or grassy picnic-spots.

At Buffels Bay, there’s also a safe tidal pool overlooking the False Bay area and you’re surrounded by rich, natural Cape flora.

For Bordjiesdrif, the circular grass patches offer an ideal place to set up a fun, family picnic.

If you picnic here, just remember to keep things tidy; don’t feed the baboons and keep a safe distance from them; and remember that no alcohol is allowed inside the reserve.

West Coast National Park: Kraalbaai

Another wonderful summertime picnic spot is undoubtedly Kraalbaai and the West Coast National Park at large.

While the park has several gorgeous places to sit and enjoy a picnic, Kraalbaai’s beach offers the perfect, secluded and stunning place to enjoy a family picnic. Especially as it overlooks the beautiful Langebaan Lagoon and offers safe swimming for young and old alike.

However, the park and beaches can get very busy in summertime, so get there early to snag a picnic spot!

If you prefer a picnic by the sea, then head to the Tsaarsbank section of the park. Here, just as at Kraalbaai, you can safely braai or picnic.

You do have to pay an entry fee for the park but otherwise, you can picnic for free.

Chapman’s Peak Drive

Not only is Chapman’s Peak Drive, near Hout Bay, a wonderful, world-famous drive to enjoy but it also offers some incredible viewing spots, where you can stop for a delightful picnic experience.

During summertime, sunset picnics are particularly popular here but honestly, in fair weather, Chappies is beautiful the whole day. Best of all, you’ll be afforded some incredible ocean and mountain views while you picnic!

If you’re not in the mood to rustle up your own picnic spread, reach out to Hout Bay-based picnic company, Protea Picnics for some assistance.

There are plenty of bins nearby so please don’t litter!

Various Wine Farms

In the Cape Winelands, we are blessed with some of the best picnics. With all kinds of options, including vegan-, vegetarian- and of course, kiddies’ picnics available, our wine farms are perfect for pre-ordered picnics.

Some of the best wine farm picnics include those from Spier, Boschendal, Vergelegen, Aluvia and more.

Most picnics charge a rate per basket for two people sharing, with separate pricing for kiddies or groups. They also normally require you to book a minimum 24 hours in advance and to collect your picnic during certain time slots.

Depending on where you go, picnic pricing, availability and options will vary. For full fees, picnic rules and picnic menu options, contact an estate of your choice.

Also, keep in mind that some estates, like Vergelegen, charge a small per person entry fee.

Indulge in an Iced Coffee Tasting at Revved Up Cafe

Revved Up Cafe went viral for their hot chocolate tastings in 2024 and now, they’ve got the perfect summer fix: iced coffee tastings!

If you and your lover are coffee fiends, then you’ll certainly enjoy this unique coffee tasting.

At present, their coffee tasting costs R99 per person and includes a creme brulee iced coffee (paired with a mini vanilla muffin); a Vietnamese-style condensed milk iced coffee (paired with a mini cheesecake ball); and a cookies and cream iced coffee (paired with a brownie bite).

As a bonus, well-behaved, leashed pets are allowed in their seating area so you can bring your furry friend along on the date!

Enjoy a Sunset Cruise at the V&A Waterfront

The December school holidays can often seem especially long to parents (and kids) alike. And many parents struggle to keep up with a flurry of activities and adventure that most children seem to crave during the summer holidays.

Slide through the Holiday Season at Canal Walk (6 December - 12 January)

If you missed the ice slides last year, then good news because Canal Walk’s incredible slide experience is back! And the ice slides will be around from 6 December to 12 January 2025
(although they’ll be closed on 25 December (Christmas Day)).

While these epic holiday ice slides are inspired by Disney, this year, they’ve focused on bringing “the magic of tropical islands and oceanic landscapes”, with a fun nod to the highly anticipated Moana 2 movie.

Located at Freedom Village, Paarl, Playrock is an exciting, new adventure park for families to have a blast at.

One of the loveliest options is Steenberg’s annual Christmas carols. This year, Kevin Abbott and his band will bring festive melodies to life.

This unmissable annual event promises music and magic under the stars in the incredible Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

Kuier at the Castle - Festive Edition

The historic, iconic Castle of Good Hope is where you can enjoy “Cape Town CBD’s biggest gift market”.

The Craft and Design Institute (CDI) and Castle are collaborating to bring you not one but two special festive editions! These events will offer unique shopping experiences, fun entertainment (including live performers and DJs), as well as an array of food- and artisan-stalls and much, much more.

Entrance fee: R30 per adult; R15 per child and pensioner; and free to kids under 7. There is safe parking on the Castle grounds (via the Darling Street entrance).

The Skeppend Kersmark

Held in the beautiful Cape Winelands at Simonsvlei Wine Estate, Paarl, this annual Christmas market is always a joy to experience.

This year, however, they plan to be bigger than ever and have some 300 stalls, with the market stretching over a three-week period.

This family-friendly market is also an important event fundraiser for Dascro NHW. And, because it’s so family-friendly, you can even bring well-behaved dogs, strictly on a leash, with!

Cape Town is beautiful year-round, no matter the time of day but there’s no question that a sunset in the Mother City is pure magic.

What could be more fun than a late afternoon city bus tour and getting to watch the sunset with your loved ones from Signal Hill?

This ‘Golden Hour’ trip, which takes you along the Atlantic seaboard, through Sea Point and Camps Bay and up to the scenic Signal Hill, is one for the memory banks.

For this tour, don’t forget to pack in your camera/selfie stick and of course, a lovely homemade picnic to enjoy while you watch the sun go down.

Note: This tour is valid for the evening only and runs for approximately three hours. It is not a hop-on, hop-off trip and on busy evenings, there can be traffic delays, so factor this into your schedule.

This tour operates daily and departs from Stop 1, V&A Waterfront. Departure time depends on the time of year but may be as early as 16:45 pm.

Cape Point and Penguin Explorer Tour

What better way to explore the magnificent Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope than with a special Cape Point and Peninsula Tour?

This tour allows you to see some of the city’s best attractions, including Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope and the famous, penguin-inhabited Boulders Beach, with a friendly tour guide leading the way.

V&A Harbour and Seal Cruise

If City Sightseeing’s beautiful, open-air red buses aren’t your vibe, then why not try a great harbour cruise by boat instead?
These V&A boat rides are a wonderful way to explore the city’s famous harbour, which is often home to the likes of Sunfish, Cape Fur seals and more.

You can also see visiting international ships, which dock at the harbour; and it’s an excellent way to learn more about the city’s famous, proud nautical history too!

Note: The tours are weather-dependent but otherwise run from 09:00 am - 17:00 pm (and later in summer).
The cruise lasts for about 25 minutes and departs every 30 minutes from the V&A Waterfront, at Bus Stop 1, below the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Choose from Two Free Tour Options with CitySightseeing Cape Town

Some other great, free walking tour options are those offered by CitySightseeing Cape Town. They have two walking tour options: a Bo-Kaap Walking Tour and a Historic Walking Tour.

The Cape Town Science Centre, situated in Observatory, is wonderful for young and old to experience year-round but they have an exciting September programme on the go and you’re going to want to check it out!

Their awe-inspiring Celestial Holiday Programme, which runs from 20 - 30 September 2024, is going to take a deeper look into astronomy, with the help of some hands-on, fun workshops and thrilling demonstrations for all ages.

This programme will also include their Light Room and Camera Obscura tours, as well as some Edutaining Science Shows. Additionally, there will be awesome Planetarium shows for all ages.

Visit Willowbridge Shopping Centre for their Donut Drip Studio Holiday Programme

Moving over to the Northern Suburbs, we have an exciting Donut Drip Studio Holiday Programme, taking place at PnP Court, Willowbridge Shopping Centre from 21 - 29 September 2024.

This fun programme is designed to target all inspiring graffiti artists, ages 3-10. They’ll be able to unleash all their creative juices, as they create edible art (using safe, edible spray paints, ink pens and paints) by decorating and designing their favourite Dairy Den Donuts.

For the programme, each child receives the following:

Heritage Day (24 September), otherwise fondly known as ‘National Braai Day’, is a special holiday that allows South Africans to celebrate our diverse cultures and heritage in the best ways possible: with friends and loved ones; over a delicious meal; or as part of a unique cultural outing.

In this post, we highlight some great ways to celebrate Heritage Day 2024 in Cape Town:

Braai at Central Park, Century City

If you’re planning to be near Century City for Braai Day, then you’re going to want to partake in the fun Heritage Day braai, which will take place at tranquil Central Park.

Participating guests can choose between either a bring their own braai option (R200 cost per site; bring all your own braai goodies and a weber) or they can ‘hire and braai’ (R500 cost per site).

If you choose the hire and braai option, you’ll be provided with all the necessary braai essentials - including the braai itself, blitz and charcoal. However, you need to bring your own food and utensils!

On the day, there will be a host of fun activities to enjoy nearby, including live entertainment, kiddies’ activities and even boat and tram rides.

Guests are welcome to bring their own gazebos, tables and camping chairs (just please leave the umbrellas at home).

The Century City Clubhouse will have refreshments available on the day and guests can order braai packs from Diva Cuisine.

Braai Up a Storm or Picnic in a Local National Park or Public Site

Cape Town has some incredible public braai facilities and picnic spots in some of our most beautiful destinations - including places like Maiden’s Cove Braai Area, the West Coast National Park’s designated braai spots and even Cape Point Nature Reserve’s Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif.

While some of the braai sites do include an entrance fee (like the West Coast National Park and Cape Point Nature Reserve, which forms part of the vast Table Mountain National Park), it’s worth it if you want to braai by the ocean and enjoy an incredible day out in nature!

Other attractions on-site near these ocean-lying braai spots include lovely tidal pools for the kiddies or safe swimming, like in the West Coast National Park’s stunning Kraalbaai and Langebaan Lagoon.

If you do decide to braai at one of these special locations, please be careful of wildfires, don’t litter and practice fire safety at all times.

Also, just keep in mind that, as these are popular public braai spots, they may fill up early so please follow the ‘first come, first serve’ rule and either beat the early bird there or wait your turn.

Alternatively, you could also pack a beautiful picnic filled with your favourite local cultural drinks and non-alcoholic beverages.

Enjoy a Free Aweh! Event at the V&A Waterfront

This free event will see exciting, vibrant young performers, dancers and even a choir perform a host of English and Afrikaans songs, as well as showcasing some traditional Khoi riel dangers.
