Great Picnic Spots for Summer in the Western Cape

Picnic

Summertime in the Western Cape is the perfect time to enjoy a wonderful picnic in the beautiful outdoors. With balmy temperatures, sunny skies and gorgeous scenery, there are few things more lovely than a summer picnic in the Cape!

Whether you pack your own picnic or enjoy a fully prepared one from a wine farm or local picnic company (like Protea Picnics or Dial-a-Picnic), the options are endless.

In this post, we share some great picnic spots for summer in the Western Cape:

Cape Point: Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif

Buffels Bay

Cape Point Nature Reserve might seem like an unlikely place for a picnic but it’s actually an incredibly popular spot to picnic year-round!

While you do have to pay an entry fee to enter the reserve, you can picnic for free at one of two picnic spots, Buffels Bay or Bordjiesdrif. Both spots double as braai- or grassy picnic-spots.

At Buffels Bay, there’s also a safe tidal pool overlooking the False Bay area and you’re surrounded by rich, natural Cape flora.

For Bordjiesdrif, the circular grass patches offer an ideal place to set up a fun, family picnic.

If you picnic here, just remember to keep things tidy; don’t feed the baboons and keep a safe distance from them; and remember that no alcohol is allowed inside the reserve.

West Coast National Park: Kraalbaai

Another wonderful summertime picnic spot is undoubtedly Kraalbaai and the West Coast National Park at large.

While the park has several gorgeous places to sit and enjoy a picnic, Kraalbaai’s beach offers the perfect, secluded and stunning place to enjoy a family picnic. Especially as it overlooks the beautiful Langebaan Lagoon and offers safe swimming for young and old alike.

However, the park and beaches can get very busy in summertime, so get there early to snag a picnic spot!

Tsaarsbank

If you prefer a picnic by the sea, then head to the Tsaarsbank section of the park. Here, just as at Kraalbaai, you can safely braai or picnic.

You do have to pay an entry fee for the park but otherwise, you can picnic for free.

Just remember to follow the park rules, don’t litter and remember alcohol is not permitted at any public area, including beaches, the banks and shores of the Langebaan Lagoon and of course, picnic- and braai-sites.

Chapman’s Peak Drive

Chapmans Peak

Not only is Chapman’s Peak Drive, near Hout Bay, a wonderful, world-famous drive to enjoy but it also offers some incredible viewing spots, where you can stop for a delightful picnic experience.

During summertime, sunset picnics are particularly popular here but honestly, in fair weather, Chappies is beautiful the whole day. Best of all, you’ll be afforded some incredible ocean and mountain views while you picnic!

If you’re not in the mood to rustle up your own picnic spread, reach out to Hout Bay-based picnic company, Protea Picnics for some assistance.

There are plenty of bins nearby so please don’t litter!

Depending on how far along Chappies you venture, there is a toll gate fee charged per vehicle. But picnicking here is otherwise free.

Various Wine Farms

Wine Farms

In the Cape Winelands, we are blessed with some of the best picnics. With all kinds of options, including vegan-, vegetarian- and of course, kiddies’ picnics available, our wine farms are perfect for pre-ordered picnics.

Some of the best wine farm picnics include those from Spier, Boschendal, Vergelegen, Aluvia and more.

Most picnics charge a rate per basket for two people sharing, with separate pricing for kiddies or groups. They also normally require you to book a minimum 24 hours in advance and to collect your picnic during certain time slots.

Depending on where you go, picnic pricing, availability and options will vary. For full fees, picnic rules and picnic menu options, contact an estate of your choice.

Also, keep in mind that some estates, like Vergelegen, charge a small per person entry fee.

Romantic Ideas for the Month of Love

Dressing Gown

February, the month of love, is upon us but if you’re weary of cramped restaurants or overpriced flowers every February, then why not try something a little different for that oh-so-romantic celebration or loving gesture?

In this post, we share some unique, romantic ideas for the month of love:

Catch the Sunset at Chappies or on Table Mountain

Chapmans

Few mountain drives are more scenic or special than Chapman’s Peak Drive, otherwise fondly known as ‘Chappies’.

With world-class engineering, heart-in-mouth twists and turns and gorgeous mountain- and ocean-views, Chappies is endlessly beautiful and perfect for a romantic outing.

Wanderlust

During summertime, it’s also the perfect place to park or drive and watch the spectacular Cape sunsets. And what could be more romantic than a picnic or packed snack while you watch the sun dip?

Alternatively, if Chappies isn’t quite your fancy, why not catch a late cable car up and watch the sunset from Table Mountain?

With extended summer hours and long, balmy days, it’s a fun way to see the city in golden hour.

Indulge in an Iced Coffee Tasting at Revved Up Cafe

Revved up Cafe

Revved Up Cafe went viral for their hot chocolate tastings in 2024 and now, they’ve got the perfect summer fix: iced coffee tastings!

If you and your lover are coffee fiends, then you’ll certainly enjoy this unique coffee tasting.

At present, their coffee tasting costs R99 per person and includes a creme brulee iced coffee (paired with a mini vanilla muffin); a Vietnamese-style condensed milk iced coffee (paired with a mini cheesecake ball); and a cookies and cream iced coffee (paired with a brownie bite).

As a bonus, well-behaved, leashed pets are allowed in their seating area so you can bring your furry friend along on the date!

Walk-ins are welcome but you can also book here via Dineplan.

Enjoy a Sunset Cruise at the V&A Waterfront

Sunsets

If you’re up for something more adventurous, why not book a soothing sunset cruise at the V&A Waterfront? As a fun, summery bonus, these tours usually include some sparkling wine to toast to at sea.

There are several tour operators, like City Sightseeing Cape Town and Waterfront Charters, who offer this type of sunset cruise so it’s simply a matter of picking your preferred one and/or sticking within your budget.

Pricing varies according to the tour operator and experience but can cost anything from R900 for two to R500 to R600 per person.

Sunset cruises are normally weather-dependent so always check ahead with your provider.

Cuddle up for a Movie with The Galileo, The Labia, Nu Metro or SterKinekor

Galileo

Last but not least, why not cuddle up for a movie with your special person? There are a number of great options to choose from.

What to Do With Kids Before the 2025 Back-to- School Chaos Hits

Kids Activities

The December school holidays can often seem especially long to parents (and kids) alike. And many parents struggle to keep up with a flurry of activities and adventure that most children seem to crave during the summer holidays.

Thankfully, in and around Cape Town, we’re fortunate to have so many family-friendly attractions and holiday activities to keep the kiddies, tweens and teens entertained during the school break.

In this post, we share some fun things to do before the 2025 back-to-school chaos hits!

Slide through the Holiday Season at Canal Walk (6 December - 12 January)

If you missed the ice slides last year, then good news because Canal Walk’s incredible slide experience is back! And the ice slides will be around from 6 December to 12 January 2025
(although they’ll be closed on 25 December (Christmas Day)).

While these epic holiday ice slides are inspired by Disney, this year, they’ve focused on bringing “the magic of tropical islands and oceanic landscapes”, with a fun nod to the highly anticipated Moana 2 movie.

Canal Walk

Young and old can enjoy the ice slides, with great discounts for family packages available too.
But there’s also fun sand play and Disney-themed activities to enjoy here! What’s more, there’s even a professional photographer on-hand to capture your slide fun.

Find the ice slides at the Canal Walk Centre Court and let the holiday fun begin!

For more information on their pricing, attractions and operating hours, please visit their website: canalwalk.co.za/event/holiday-ice-slides or book on Webtickets.

Hint: Another worthwhile experience at Canal Walk this holiday season is the Kids Club Express. Learn more about it here: canalwalk.co.za/event/kc-express-train-nov2024.

Adventure at Playrock in Paarl

Playrock

Located at Freedom Village, Paarl, Playrock is an exciting, new adventure park for families to have a blast at.

Playrock offers young and old the perfect mix of adventure, including an indoor playpark, a trampoline park, mini golf course, mini outdoor soccer pitch and even a lovely family eatery.

Playrock Restaurant

As they are open from Tuesdays - Sunday, they give families the perfect opportunity to visit during the holidays, especially if you have to work remotely while the kiddies play.

Although walk-ins are always welcome, it’s best to book in advance, especially on busy summertime weekends or if you wish to host a party here.

For more information on their pricing, attractions and operating hours, please visit their website: www.playrock.co.za.

Book a Family-friendly Winelands Picnic

Spier Wine Farm

There’s nothing better than a family-friendly picnic experience in the Cape Winelands. And these days, so many wine farms not only cater to kids’ palates but they also offer a host of fun, family-friendly experiences to enjoy on-site before or after your picnic.

Some of the top estates in the Cape Winelands, like Spier, Boschendal, Rhebokskloof, Jordan Wines and more, offer some child-friendly picnic options, as well as a host of fun activities to enjoy together as a family.

Boschendal

Whether the kids are after a pony ride or want to tear up a bike track; or even if you simply wish to go for a family MTB bike ride or hike together, the summertime activity options are almost endless.

Note: Picnic bookings usually need to be made 24-48 hours in advance and menu options vary.

Some estates offer vegan or vegetarian, as well as standard- and child-friendly-picnic menu options.

So pick an appropriate wine farm, feast as a family and then explore our beautiful Cape Winelands together!

For this post, we want to focus on one of the city’s unique experiences and businesses: Professional Yachtmaster Training (PYT), a sailing- and yachtmaster company that focuses on training aspiring sailors and yachtmasters in this noble, daring profession.

Sailing- and Yachtmaster-Training

PYT started out in September 2000 in Durban with pretty humble beginnings but it’s come a long way since then!

Today, this incredible business and professional academy boasts some of the highest qualifications in both seafaring and tertiary studies and has branches in both Durban and Hout Bay, Cape Town that allow you to train as a yachtmaster and embark on a new, thrilling career journey, which can open doors for you across the world.

However, for the purposes of this post, we’d like to share more information on their Hout Bay branch specifically.

PYT’s Cape Town Branch is Situated in Beautiful Hout Bay

Cannon

What better place to run a yachtmaster training company and business from than Cape Town’s idyllic Hout Bay, a tranquil seaside village known for its rich history, maritime ties and of course, its active commercial fishing industry?

Based in Mainstream Village, Hout Bay, PYT’s Cape Town office include excellent lecture- and classroom-facilities and friendly, expert staff, who are there to help you learn all you need to know, while also going the extra mile to make your experience with them memorable and fun!

From here, they are able to offer most courses, including basic Deck Hand to MCA, Officer of the Watch and even Master modules.

Best of all, with such charming surroundings, you’ll almost feel as if you’re on holiday, as you study in one of South Africa’s most beautiful places, famed for its harbour, great tourist attractions and scenic experiences, like Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Benefits of Yachtmaster Training for Students and Professionals Alike

Yachtmaster Training for Students and Professionals

If you’re wondering whether the training or a career as a yachtmaster is hard work, then the answer is yes!
However, it’s a passionate career choice that allows candidates to work in a respected industry; earn well; travel the world and meet interesting people; undergo personal growth and develop better people skills; and above all, build character!

If you’re unsure where to begin, a basic crew course with PYT is a great place to start. Otherwise, for a full breakdown of PYT’s course options, dates (which include 2025 dates) and rates, please see here:

Best Ways to Celebrate Heritage Day 2024

Heritage Day

Heritage Day (24 September), otherwise fondly known as ‘National Braai Day’, is a special holiday that allows South Africans to celebrate our diverse cultures and heritage in the best ways possible: with friends and loved ones; over a delicious meal; or as part of a unique cultural outing.

In this post, we highlight some great ways to celebrate Heritage Day 2024 in Cape Town:

Braai at Central Park, Century City

If you’re planning to be near Century City for Braai Day, then you’re going to want to partake in the fun Heritage Day braai, which will take place at tranquil Central Park.

Participating guests can choose between either a bring their own braai option (R200 cost per site; bring all your own braai goodies and a weber) or they can ‘hire and braai’ (R500 cost per site).

If you choose the hire and braai option, you’ll be provided with all the necessary braai essentials - including the braai itself, blitz and charcoal. However, you need to bring your own food and utensils!

On the day, there will be a host of fun activities to enjoy nearby, including live entertainment, kiddies’ activities and even boat and tram rides.

Guests are welcome to bring their own gazebos, tables and camping chairs (just please leave the umbrellas at home).

The Century City Clubhouse will have refreshments available on the day and guests can order braai packs from Diva Cuisine.

Book your braai spot today to partake in this fun event: https://bit.ly/4dQdKXP.

Braai Up a Storm or Picnic in a Local National Park or Public Site

Cape Town has some incredible public braai facilities and picnic spots in some of our most beautiful destinations - including places like Maiden’s Cove Braai Area, the West Coast National Park’s designated braai spots and even Cape Point Nature Reserve’s Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif.

While some of the braai sites do include an entrance fee (like the West Coast National Park and Cape Point Nature Reserve, which forms part of the vast Table Mountain National Park), it’s worth it if you want to braai by the ocean and enjoy an incredible day out in nature!

Other attractions on-site near these ocean-lying braai spots include lovely tidal pools for the kiddies or safe swimming, like in the West Coast National Park’s stunning Kraalbaai and Langebaan Lagoon.

If you do decide to braai at one of these special locations, please be careful of wildfires, don’t litter and practice fire safety at all times.

Also, just keep in mind that, as these are popular public braai spots, they may fill up early so please follow the ‘first come, first serve’ rule and either beat the early bird there or wait your turn.

Alternatively, you could also pack a beautiful picnic filled with your favourite local cultural drinks and non-alcoholic beverages.

For more on these public braai spots and the entry fees, opening times for these locations, please visit the relevant websites for West Coast National Park, Maiden’s Cove and Cape Point.

Enjoy a Free Aweh! Event at the V&A Waterfront

If you’d prefer to soak up some local culture, you’re going to love the Aweh Heritage Day showcase, taking place at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre on 24 September, from 14:00 - 17:00 pm.

This free event will see exciting, vibrant young performers, dancers and even a choir perform a host of English and Afrikaans songs, as well as showcasing some traditional Khoi riel dangers.

The lineup for this Heritage Day event can be viewed here:
