As we head into August, winter might be slowly loosening its icy grip on the Western Cape but don’t be lulled into thinking that means all our cold, wintry days are behind.
In the Mother City, temperatures often stay low well into October. Given this, we thought we would share a few more cosy cafes and warm restaurants with fireplaces, near Hout Bay, where you can sit beside a fire and think, chat or feast till Cape Town shakes off her winter coat and basks us all in her beautiful, balmy days again.
Beyond this shortlist, there really are plenty of delightfully cosy restaurants and cafes to enjoy across the Mother City and Cape Winelands, many with gas heaters, warm aircon and yes, roaring fireplaces but these are definitely some of our top picks.
Best of all? They are all close to Hout Bay and our very own self-catering apartment trio.
Nostos Taverna

First up, we have the new Greek favourite, Nostos, based in our own Hout Bay village.
This restaurant offers an intimate, yet inviting dining experience with the assurance of friendly service and beautiful food in a simple, snug setting.
It doesn’t hurt that it features a fireplace of its own to keep things roasty toasty inside, even on the greyest Hout Bay day.
Be sure to try this new Cape Town restaurant for its authentic Greek cuisine, warm hosts and cosy atmosphere.
Jonkershuis | Simon’s Restaurant at Groot Constantia
Groot Constantia, a short drive away from our beautiful Hout Bay, is one of the most historic wine farms in the world.
Its name has been mentioned in everything from a much-loved Jane Austen novel to also being included on Napoleon’s private wine list… and with good reason!
Because this beautiful Constantia estate has it all: a stunning setting, rich Cape- and wine producing-history, two lovely eateries and some cool wine tasting experiences and tours to boot.
Now, if it’s cosy winter- or early spring-dining that you are seeking, then you really can’t go wrong with Groot Constantia, as both of its restaurants have a fireplace available to keep the chill at bay.
Jonkershuis is the more family-friendly option, while Simon’s is a great option for friend groups, work lunches, social gatherings or even fun events.
Whichever eatery you choose to visit at Groot Constantia, you are guaranteed a good time, filled with plenty of warmth!
The Azure Restaurant

The Azure Restaurant, located within The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, needs little introduction on the Cape Town foodie scene.
It has long been wowing patrons with its gorgeous sea views, elegant seating options (both inside and out), fine food and yes, you guessed it: altogether romantic, fireside dining.
Whether you visit on an unseasonably warm day or a chilly pre-spring one, you will appreciate that the fireplace adds a sense of atmosphere (and literal warmth) to this special Camps Bay restaurant.
Massimo’s

Another Italian favourite in Cape Town, and especially our beloved Hout Bay, is Massimo’s.
Here, you can enjoy refreshingly tasty, authentic Italian fare, complete with a lovely setting and cosy vibes aplenty, especially as the restaurant has its own fireplace/pizza oven to keep you warm during wintertime.
And honestly, what is a better match than good Italian food and a snug eatery?
