The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (otherwise known as Zeitz MOCAA), located in the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District, is a wonderfully ground-breaking, not-for-profit institution that is home to some truly memorable African art exhibits, collections, preservations and more.

This uniquely African contemporary museum is also a marvel in architectural design, brought to life by London-based Heatherwick Studio.

As mentioned previously, some of Africa’s best art collections and exhibits can be enjoyed at Zeitz but it’s also a vibrant physical testament to the incredible artists we have in Africa, including in our own sunny South Africa. Best of all, the exhibits are constantly changing every few months so you can visit several times a year and still have a unique experience.

2) Free Visits Under Selected Circumstances

Another great thing about the Zeitz MOCAA is how accessible and easily explorable it is, especially to locals.

For example, if it’s your birthday month, then you can actually enjoy visiting the museum for free, provided you bring along a valid SA ID book or African passport that shows your birth date.

Alternatively, every Wednesday (between 10:00 am - 13:00 pm), all African citizens in possession of a valid SA ID book or African passport can also enjoy free entry.

And lastly, for under 18s, the museum is also free to explore. (Teens will need some form of ID though.)

This is just another way that the city and Zeitz MOCAA create a fun, free experience for everyone.

Lastly, whether you pay or enjoy a complimentary experience, visitors have the option of booking a free, guided museum tour, which is offered from Monday - Friday at 12:30 pm. There is limited space so be sure to book upon arrival at the front desk!

Ceres Rail Company

The Ceres Rail Company has reignited the nostalgic beauty of steam train travel for the Mother City.

While their most famous, popular trip is their one from Cape Town to Elgin Railway Market, a thrilling, steam-punk themed market in the verdant Elgin Valley, they now also offer several other unique journeys from Cape Town or in and around the Overberg itself.

At the time of writing, you can book an overnight stay in the Overberg through their trip from Cape Town to the beautiful Houw Hoek Hotel or, alternatively, opt for the Overberg Explorer. This allows you to discover the beauty of the Cape Overberg Region by train when you travel from Bot River to the bustling Elgin Railway Market.

Winelands Light Railway

This is another fun one for the family to experience together, especially as the Winelands Light Railway is primarily geared towards little ones.

Take them on a scenic, seven-minute journey (760 metres) around the beautiful train park, which is designed to create lasting memories for children and their parents on weekends, public holidays, school holidays and long weekends.

This is also a locally designed and built miniature railway, which offers two electric engines, Dozer and Fritz.

While visiting the Winelands Light Railway, guests are also welcome to bring a picnic basket and enjoy a peaceful day out or to buy some refreshments and snacks from the on-site kiosk. (You can also host great events, including birthdays, gender reveal parties and school outings, here.)

New Cape Central Railway

If you want to travel a bit further out for a unique small town experience, then the New Cape Central Railway offers the perfect, historic train trip for travellers to enjoy.

Departing from Robertson Station, every Saturday at 10:00 am, this special, 3.5-hour-long trip takes you on a scenic journey through beautiful vineyards and the open fields of the Breede River and Langeberg Valleys, which, together, form the Cape Central Valley.

More recently, they have also been promoting an exciting trip from Robertson to Matjiesfontein for 21 June 2025, although this journey is not child-friendly and does not include accommodation.

It offers a series of four unique courses, each designed to captivate and thrill treetop adventurers from start to finish.

For the mini forest climbers, there’s the Kid’s Acro-twigs course, which is ideal for children ages 3-6. With 18 safely designed obstacles, this course is a great introduction to coordination and balance and operates under the watchful safety of excellent instructors, who ensure your little ones have a blast exploring, meet every challenge head-on and ultimately, have a great time outdoors.

Cape Town is famous for its penguin-inhabited beach situated in Simon’s Town, known as Boulders Beach, or Boulders to locals.

Here, at this pristine, protected beach, which forms part of the Table Mountain National Park
(TMNP), you will find some of the Mother City’s most popular tuxedoed little guys. This colony of African penguins is one of the few sites in the world of its kind and, as a result, it is naturally a world-famous tourist destination!

More importantly though, the Boulders section of TMNP (which consists of three pristine beaches, three boardwalks and one penguin viewing area) is a protected safe haven for the African penguins, who first established their colony here in 1983.

Over time though, the penguins’ breeding numbers have worryingly declined and, as of 26 May 2010, their status went from Vulnerable to Endangered.

More recently, though, as of 2024, the penguins are sadly now listed as Critically Endangered, due to threats like climate change, overfishing, oil spills and more.

Many locals and rescue/NGO organisations, like Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), are doing their best to preserve and protect the penguins and their natural habitats.

How You Can Help the African Penguins

No matter whether you are a stalwart Capetonian or a visiting tourist, you can do your bit to help save the African penguins.

Firstly, and perhaps the simplest, yet most impactful way, is to spread awareness online, especially on social media. Share posts about the threats and dangers to the penguins and how people can safeguard them or give back through financial donations, fundraisers and the like.

Secondly, offer your direct support to SANCCOB. Whether through donations, by adopting a penguin or even volunteering with them, there’s so much you can do to aid SANCCOB in their protective cause.

Thirdly, when visiting places like Boulders Beach or even Stony Point Nature Reserve (another coastal home of the African penguins), be mindful and respectful of the rules.

Don’t touch, feed or antagonise the penguins; check your car before driving away (sometimes the penguins hide under cars and get run over or injured as a result); always stick to the designated walkways; keep noise levels to a minimum to avoid stressing the breeding penguins; and above all, don’t litter or harm their natural habitat in any way.

Other ways to help include donating monetary funds or aid relief to rescue operations or protective causes; reducing single-use plastics and of course, fishing responsibly, as all of these efforts help promote cleaner, safer oceans. This, in turn, leads to a healthier, less fragile ecosystem for the African penguins and other vulnerable marine life.

Famously named ‘the Cape of Storms’ by Portuguese explorer, Bartholomeu Dias in 1488, the ‘Point’ has always enjoyed a deep, fearful respect from sailors.

By day, it used to serve as a navigational landmark, while, by night or in foggy conditions, it became an unfortunate magnet for shipwrecks, as violent storms and treacherous rocks greeted unsuspecting, helpless vessels with a cold embrace.

Today, Cape Point is one of South Africa’s most beautiful tourist destinations and is situated within the protective jurisdiction of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, itself within the vast Table Mountain National Park.

It’s a fun, scenic and family-friendly attraction that offers nature walks and hikes; secluded beaches; two famous lighthouses; curio shops and eateries; and a wealth of rich flora and fauna.

Just keep in mind that Cape Point has paid entry for visitors.

The Two Lighthouses at Cape Point

Cape Point is home to two rather famous lighthouses. The first, built in 1859, stands at 238metres above sea level, on the highest peak, Da Gama Peak. Today, it is used as the centralised monitoring point for all South African lighthouses.

You can visit this famous, old lighthouse via the fun Flying Dutchman funicular — so named after the dreaded ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman, which is believed to haunt the shores of the Cape of Good Hope, forever unable to make port — or by taking a slow, steady walk up the steep hill and well-cut stairs to the top.

The second lighthouse, meanwhile, was built in 1914, when it became clear that the original was positioned too high up and was actually ineffective in misty conditions.

The newer, inaccessible lighthouse is located only 87-metres above sea level and is the most powerful lighthouse on our South African coast. And, while you can’t hike to it, you can still enjoy seeing it from afar when visiting Cape Point.

Tackle Nature Walks and Shipwreck Hikes

As it is a nature sanctuary, Cape Point is a spectacular place to enjoy a pretty walk or even a more challenging hike. There are several shorter and/or overnight trails that allow you to see a plethora of fynbos, wildlife and even undisturbed sandy beaches.

For a start, there’s the +/- two kilometre Lighthouse Keeper’s Trail. This begins at the upper funicular station and takes you along a narrow, solid path to a sheer cliff face, overlooking the new lighthouse down below.

Along the way, you pass historical bunkers and get a great view of the old Cape Point lighthouse, which towers above.

Or you can try the Cape of Good Hope Trail, which takes you down past the gorgeous Diaz Beach to the famous Cape of Good Hope sign, which is situated at the southernmost point of the Cape Peninsula. It’s a popular spot for photos but there are also some beautiful cliffs, rough seas and incredible game to see here. Keep an eye out for the buck and ostriches that are often seen nearby.

Other trails include Antoniesgat, Gifkommetjie, Kanonkop, Phyllisia Circuit and the Shipwreck trails.

Discover Secluded Beaches and Braai- and Picnic-Spots

Cape Point offers some beautiful, pristine beaches, including Diaz-, Buffels-, Maclear-, Olifantsbos- and the ever-wild Platboom-Beach.

Buffels Beach is hugely popular among day visitors, as you can enjoy a braai (barbeque) or picnic here too. There are also some safe tidal pools nearby and the views over False Bay and towards Cape Point make it a truly beautiful spot.

Another beloved picnic- and braai-spot is Bordjiesrif, which also features a tidal pool.

Just keep in mind there are no lifeguards on duty at Buffels Bay or Bordjiesrif.

Visit Cape Point’s Curio Shops and Eateries

Cape Point also has some food spots to enjoy (although you can just as easily enjoy a more affordable braai or picnic at the designated sites within the reserve).

If you prefer a beautiful meal at a truly panoramic restaurant, then book a table at the Two Oceans Restaurant. While for more casual eats and takeaway options, try The Food Shop.

Cape Point also offers several curio shops in the Cape Point Logo Shop, Cape Point Parks Shop and the maritime-themed LH5. So buy a keepsake, gift or magnet and keep a piece of Cape Point with you forever!

Since its inception in 1970, over time, the Two Oceans Marathon has cemented itself as Africa’s biggest running event by economic impact, as these days, the marathon contributes some R672 million to the Western Cape’s annual economy.

Beyond that, though, it is beloved as “the world’s most beautiful marathon” and has also played an important part in breaking limiting social barriers, including ones which prohibited both women and people of colour from entering races like this, particularly during the Apartheid Era in South Africa.

And what started rather simply back in 1970 with only 26 competitors, now sees a host of “local, upcountry and international” runners competing in this prestigious, scenic race.

A Vibe and a Half

The Two Oceans Marathon race weekend is consistently hailed as one of the best race occasions in South Africa. It is synonymous with Easter Weekend in the Mother City and a host of pre-race activities, including family day, fun runs on Easter Friday, as well as some other excitement and fun for friends, family and supporters to enjoy en-route, as the race is happening.

This year, the race weekend is set to take place on 5-6 April 2025 and is sure to attract thousands of race participants again, especially if the 2024 stats are anything to go by! (The main Ultra Marathon alone attracted just under 13 000 athletes last year in 2024.)

But, beyond the gruelling physical- and emotional-challenges of competing in a race like this, it’s the atmosphere and community spirit that this occasion brings to the Mother City. Like the Kaapse Klopse or the Cape Town Cycle Tour, it’s an unmissable highlight on the annual Cape Town events calendar!

And, while many parts of the city, including Hout Bay, face major traffic road closures over the course of the weekend, the race manages to foster an immense spirit of togetherness, which sees the streets come alive with fans, loved ones and spectators, all there to cheer on runners or to be part of the overall race day gees (spirit)!

Hout Bay, in particular, transforms into a hub of activity for the Ultra Marathon race, as roads are closed to traffic. This, in turn, brings about a mix of mild inconvenience and immense pride!

Choosing Between the Two Oceans Ultra- and Half Marathon Races

For competitors, there are two race options to choose from. You can opt for the main Ultra Marathon, which takes place on 5 April 2025 and covers some 56 kilometres.

Or, you can pick the shorter Half Marathon race, which takes place the following day (on 6 April) and covers some 21.1 kilometres.

Both race options have their own sense of beauty and challenges to savour and are sure to offer both race runners and spectators a marvellous race event and fun day out!

As the Western Cape’s most prestigious race, the Totalsports Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, now in its 54th edition, takes runners on a wonderful journey around the Cape Peninsula.

Along the way, athletes and fans can take in the beauty of Chapman’s Peak, Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Constantia and even leafy Newlands.

The race commences in Newlands Main Road, at Newlands Swimming Pool, before coming to an eventual end at the UCT Rugby Fields (Upper Campus) in Rondebosch.

For Half Marathon fans and runners, you can expect to be part of the 26th edition of South Africa’s biggest half marathon.

Started in 1998, this event continues to attract a sold-out field, as it once again showed in 2024. And race organisers are expecting 2025 to be as big and thrilling as ever!

What’s more, the Half Marathon is the perfect race for those who wish to be part of the historic
Two Oceans Marathon race weekend but aren’t quite ready to tackle the strenuous 56-kilometre Ultra Marathon. (Next time, perhaps!)

For this race, competitors will run through the Southern Suburbs, soaking up the beauty of Claremont, Wynberg, Constantia and the famous Southern Cross Drive before making their way to Newlands and then onto the UCT Finish Fields over in pretty Rondebosch.

Since it commenced in 1978, the Cape Town Cycle Tour has been an iconic part of Cape
Town’s annual history.

Originally called ‘The Big Ride In’ and organised by Bill Mylrea and John Stegmann to “highlight the need for cycling infrastructure”, over time, this race has become a popular, mass event that often sees some 30 000 cyclists partaking (a far cry from the original 500 or so participants).

How It All Began: The Cape Town Cycle Tour

We mentioned previously that the race began in 1978 but we didn’t really explain why it was created. In essence, this race began as a protest ride that saw cyclists advocating for safer cycling paths in the Mother City.

While it was met with early government resistance and has faced some challenges along the way, it has grown into a powerful, annual event on the Cape Town calendar.

Over the years, the route has changed several times (it was initially meant to pass through Cape Point Nature Reserve), while also breaking important political- and social-barriers.

For example, it was non-segregated during Apartheid, which meant that cyclists of all races and skin colours were free to participate. It was also the first event to allow both amateur- and professional-cyclists to compete on the same course.

Today, the race is apparently the “largest timed cycling event in the world” and draws some 30 000 riders annually.

And while things have changed over the years, the goal remains the same: to promote a healthy, active lifestyle; to provide community upliftment and to aid with overall cycling development.

This year, the race, which is set to take place on 9 March 2025, celebrates its 47th edition, proving that it remains a key fixture in the global cycling calendar.

The Magic of the Cycle Tour: How It Gives Back

Thanks to the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s success, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust is able to fund two beneficiaries: namely, the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont.

These two organisations then use the excess funds to support local social upliftment projects, which are aimed at promoting cycling development and incorporating safe cycling initiatives.

So far, with the help of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, over R130 million has been donated to charities. This is another special way that the race makes a positive, lasting impact on our local communities and the South African cycling landscape as a whole!

Choosing Which Race Route to Ride

While the Cape Town Cycle Tour is famously a 109-kilometre route, in 2023, a newer, 42kilometre route was introduced into the mix, with great success!

This shorter route is ideal for a wider range of cyclists, including beginners, junior riders or just anyone who isn’t quite ready for the full 109-kilometre route yet.

The 42-kilometre route may be shorter but it still packs a punch and offers the same thrilling feeling of being able to ride fully closed roads, while also enjoying some of Cape Town’s spectacular scenery as you ride!

Alternatively, if you’re a die-hard cycling enthusiast or professional rider, then the iconic, 109kilometre route is ideal for you. It enjoys a vibrant start in the city, before making its way along the Cape Peninsula, hugging the ocean on one side and our imposing mountains and cliffs on the other.

The ride starts near the Cape Town Castle before finally finishing back in Sea Point.

Along the way, you’ll ride along or past Nelson Mandela Boulevard, UCT, Newlands Forest, Simonstown, Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay and of course, Camps Bay and Clifton into Sea Point.

The Effect on and Support from Hout Bay and Surrounds

It’s true that the race essentially brings parts of our city, including Hout Bay, to something of a grinding halt (especially on the traffic front) but it’s also a unique and fun way for people to come together and support or watch this incredible race in-person. And honestly, the cheering crowds are one of the best aspects of this race!

The main spectator spots include Wynberg Hill; anywhere along the M3 (but especially towards Tokai); alongside the seaside locations of Muizenberg and Kalk Bay; or even along the back half of the route, which includes spots like Noordhoek Farm Village, Hout Bay and Suikerbossie.
Lastly, the home stretch through Camps Bay adds a last-gasp thrill for Cycle Tour watchers.

Summertime in the Western Cape is the perfect time to enjoy a wonderful picnic in the beautiful outdoors. With balmy temperatures, sunny skies and gorgeous scenery, there are few things more lovely than a summer picnic in the Cape!

Whether you pack your own picnic or enjoy a fully prepared one from a wine farm or local picnic company (like Protea Picnics or Dial-a-Picnic), the options are endless.

In this post, we share some great picnic spots for summer in the Western Cape:

Cape Point: Buffels Bay and Bordjiesdrif

Cape Point Nature Reserve might seem like an unlikely place for a picnic but it’s actually an incredibly popular spot to picnic year-round!

While you do have to pay an entry fee to enter the reserve, you can picnic for free at one of two picnic spots, Buffels Bay or Bordjiesdrif. Both spots double as braai- or grassy picnic-spots.

At Buffels Bay, there’s also a safe tidal pool overlooking the False Bay area and you’re surrounded by rich, natural Cape flora.

For Bordjiesdrif, the circular grass patches offer an ideal place to set up a fun, family picnic.

If you picnic here, just remember to keep things tidy; don’t feed the baboons and keep a safe distance from them; and remember that no alcohol is allowed inside the reserve.

West Coast National Park: Kraalbaai

Another wonderful summertime picnic spot is undoubtedly Kraalbaai and the West Coast National Park at large.

While the park has several gorgeous places to sit and enjoy a picnic, Kraalbaai’s beach offers the perfect, secluded and stunning place to enjoy a family picnic. Especially as it overlooks the beautiful Langebaan Lagoon and offers safe swimming for young and old alike.

However, the park and beaches can get very busy in summertime, so get there early to snag a picnic spot!

If you prefer a picnic by the sea, then head to the Tsaarsbank section of the park. Here, just as at Kraalbaai, you can safely braai or picnic.

You do have to pay an entry fee for the park but otherwise, you can picnic for free.

Chapman’s Peak Drive

Not only is Chapman’s Peak Drive, near Hout Bay, a wonderful, world-famous drive to enjoy but it also offers some incredible viewing spots, where you can stop for a delightful picnic experience.

During summertime, sunset picnics are particularly popular here but honestly, in fair weather, Chappies is beautiful the whole day. Best of all, you’ll be afforded some incredible ocean and mountain views while you picnic!

In the Cape Winelands, we are blessed with some of the best picnics. With all kinds of options, including vegan-, vegetarian- and of course, kiddies’ picnics available, our wine farms are perfect for pre-ordered picnics.

Some of the best wine farm picnics include those from Spier, Boschendal, Vergelegen, Aluvia and more.

Most picnics charge a rate per basket for two people sharing, with separate pricing for kiddies or groups. They also normally require you to book a minimum 24 hours in advance and to collect your picnic during certain time slots.

Depending on where you go, picnic pricing, availability and options will vary. For full fees, picnic rules and picnic menu options, contact an estate of your choice.

Also, keep in mind that some estates, like Vergelegen, charge a small per person entry fee.
