Visit World of Birds

World of Birds

The World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkey Park is one of the most timelessly popular Cape Town experiences for families. Not only is this the largest bird park in Africa but it’s a true Hout Bay icon.

During your visit, you can see everything from a wide range of birds to different types of monkeys and more. If you time your visit right, you can even view the feeding times.

Recently, a new cafe, called the Hornbill Cafe, has opened up at World of Birds and it promises the perfect pit stop after a day’s exploration. To round off your visit, there’s also some fun kiddie play areas and a lovely curio shop on-site.

For more information, please see their website: worldofbirds.co.za

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of the Mother City’s most timeless natural attractions.

This incredible national botanical garden boasts a rich history; offers some of the most incredible flora anywhere in the world; and is the perfect family-friendly attraction to explore with your friends and loved ones.

In this post, we share some cool things to do on a fun day out at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

1) Take a Protea Picnics Feast Along With You

Based in Hout Bay, Protea Picnics is a delightful, local picnic company that is passionately run by owner Sally de Villiers.

Sally’s affordable, yet tastefully curated Protea Picnics can be purchased and enjoyed anywhere in Cape Town. (You just need to collect your picnic order from her Hout Bay base.)

This means you can savour the picnic experience at the beach, on a mountain or yes, even at beautiful Kirstenbosch!

Best of all, for DK Villas guests who stay five nights or more at any of our Hout Bay apartments, we can offer you a beautiful picnic from Sally.

So, why not order your picnic and take it along with you to Kirstenbosch?

Kirstenbosch has so many tranquil picnic spots for visitors to enjoy and Sally’s Protea Picnics are the real deal.

Her picnics offer quality, healthy food and desserts that come beautifully packaged, with thoughtful, eco-friendly touches for extra good measure!

You can order from her set picnic menus or even build-your-own picnic. Note: Picnic orders cater for a minimum of two guests. To learn more or book a Protea Picnics experience, please see Sally’s website: www.proteapicnics.com.

2) Brave the Boomslang

Aside from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden’s many incredible garden sections, which include (to name a few), the Peninsula Garden, the Sculpture Garden, Mathews Rockery, the Education Centre - one of the garden’s most famous attractions is the thrilling Tree Canopy Walkway, affectionately called the Boomslang (tree snake in Afrikaans).

This giddying boardwalk curls above the treetops, offering incredible views from staggering heights! It even allows for some ideal photo opportunities too.

This 130-metre-long walkway is 12 metres high in places and offers visitors a unique way to admire and appreciate Kirstenbosch.

Romantic Places to Dine at in February

La Colombe

February is famously hailed as the ‘Month of Love’ and, with all that romance lingering in the air, why not plan a special, romantic meal for your significant other, galentine or even the family?

In this post, we share some romantic places to dine at in February.

Best of all, they are all conveniently situated along the Atlantic Seaboard (which stretches from the V&A Waterfront to Hout Bay), Cape Town’s city centre and the Constantia Winelands, so you don’t have to travel far to enjoy a stunning meal with your loved one(s)!

1) La Colombe (Constantia)

Arguably one of the most romantic, timelessly beautiful fine dining restaurants in Cape Town is La Colombe at Silvermist. If there’s any romantic restaurant you should save up to enjoy in the Mother City, it has to be this one.

Situated at the lovely Silvermist Estate, this Constantia-based restaurant has won countless awards and it enjoys a flawless reputation for good reason.

This French-meets-Asian-style fine dining restaurant has several set menu options, namely a Reduced Menu, Reduced Vegetarian Menu and the Chefs Menu or Vegetarian Chefs Menu.
Each menu option is sure to leave you spellbound as the food is, quite literally, art on a plate and it tastes as amazing as it looks!

At La Colombe, you can treat your special someone to an unforgettable meal; pop the question in a gorgeous, intimate setting; or simply celebrate your love’s stay.

Note: Advance bookings are highly recommended, as the restaurant sometimes books up a few weeks in advance.

La Colombe Food

2) Azure Restaurant (Camps Bay)

As a winner of South Africa’s Best Hotel Restaurant at the 2020 World Culinary Awards, Azure Restaurant, found at the 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa in Camps Bay, is not to be missed during the ‘Month of Love’.

This romantic seafood restaurant is blessed with stunning panoramic sea views; a menu that champions exquisite local ingredients; and of course, a refined dining space (with indoor and outdoor seating) second to none.

Enjoy a memorable meal here with your special someone, as you savour the best of the Atlantic Seaboard.

Noordhoek is a truly special seaside village in Cape Town that lies situated below Chapman's Peak Drive and surrounded by the vast Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).

Blessed with incredible mountain- and ocean-views and surrounded by some of the best outdoor attractions in the ‘Deep South’, Noordhoek needs little introduction.

But, in case you didn’t already know, Noordhoek is also a wonderful haven for families, friendly locals, animal lovers and of course, eager travellers too.

In this post, we share some of our favourite sightseeing attractions near Noordhoek (and charming Chapman’s Peak Drive too):

1) Drive Along Stunning Chappies

Connecting Hout Bay and Noordhoek in what can only be described as an impressive series of heart-in-mouth twists and turns, Chapman’s Peak Drive, or Chappies, as it’s fondly known to locals, is one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring mountain- and marine-drives in the world.

It has a rich history, dating back some 100 years, and is a celebrated engineering marvel. Beyond that, it’s also a true South African icon and one of Cape Town’s most well-loved travel attractions.

Chappies view

No visit to the Mother City is complete without a scenic drive along Chappies.

There is a toll road and payable per bike/vehicle fee if you wish to drive the full route. Otherwise, grab a day pass (applicable during daylight hours only) on the Hout Bay side and enjoy navigating the first 3km.

With gorgeous picnic- and viewing-spots and gorgeous sights of both the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Peninsula savoured along the way, Chappies is an unforgettable experience. And it’s the perfect way to enter and explore Noordhoek too!

2) Visit the Tranquil Cape Point Vineyards

Cape Point Vineyards is one of Cape Town’s most beautiful wine farms. Here, guests can enjoy a winery by the sea, thanks to this family-owned estate’s incredible location.

Cape Point Vineyard

Located in Noordhoek, where it is set against the world-renowned Chapman’s Peak mountain range and from where it impressively overlooks the icy Atlantic, Cape Point Vineyards offers a host of amazing experiences.

Think everything from its elegant eateries to tranquil picnics, wine tastings and the much loved, weekly summer market, which takes place every Thursday afternoon (provided weather holds)... These are just some of the many reasons to visit Cape Point Vineyards!

3) Explore Noordhoek Farm Village

Another endlessly popular Noordhoek attraction is the beloved Noordhoek Farm Village. Here, guests can discover a heady mix of quality entertainment, top-class eateries, local hangout spots, kiddies’ play areas and so much more.

Noordhoek Farm Village

From Franck Dangereux’s The Foodbarn Cafe and Tapas to the ever-popular Cafe Roux to a host of local shops, services and the weekly evening market, Noordhoek Farm Village offers something for everyone - with a wonderfully, laid-back, country vibe thrown in for good measure!

4) Grab a Bite to Eat at JAKES on the Common

If you work up an appetite, there’s no better place to grab a good meal than JAKES.

Jakes on the Common

Located at the foot of ‘Chappies’, this lovely eatery, with its carefully landscaped gardens, charming restaurant building and family-friendly atmosphere, offers guests the perfect mix of simple, yet tasty breakfasts, delicious lunches and stylish social evenings.

The Bar and Lounge adds an extra element, making it the ideal place to enjoy some craft beer, cocktails and quality wines.

Care for a Coffee?

While we have nothing against tea, we must admit that coffee is close to all our hearts. It’s that warm elixir that gets our groggy states going in the morning. It’s something to look forward to. It’s that reprieve where we can just sit and sip. And it’s something we can enjoy alone or with our loved ones. Coffee is like the glue that keeps us connected to others, and yes, often our sanity.

If you’re visiting the Western Cape, there will be no shortage of coffee and warming your heart up a little with that cuppa. So, let’s not waste any more time and set you up with your perfect fix.

Hout Bay

Both Dario’s Café and Hout Bay Coffee offer superb coffee options and are only a few minutes’ walk away from our Harbour View and Riverview spots and about a five-minute drive from our Boardwalk spot.

If you want more of a cosy, and family-friendly, Italian ambiance, Dario’s Café is your go-to and is run by an Italian couple. Not only can you indulge in some Italian coffee, which some visitors have described as the “best”, you can also have a bite to eat, from breakfasts to delicious pizzas, and more!

Hout Bay Coffee

Hout Bay Coffee offers freshly roasted coffee from their roastery, which is small batch roasted, hand sorted, and freshly delivered. Their options include Signature Blends and Single Origin.

Hout Bay Coffee Spots

Chelsea Village Wynberg

Four & Twenty Café on Wolfe Street in Chelsea Village, with their second branch on Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate, offers a cosy and quaint Parisian atmosphere. It was founded and owned by Tracy-Leigh Genricks, who studied at Silwood Kitchen Cordon Bleu Cookery School in France. With a wealth of knowledge and passion keeping this café’s heart beating, you will find delectable cups of coffee.

Wynberg Coffee
Wynberg Coffee 2

Surfer’s Corner Muizenberg

The Hans & Lloyd Coffee Co. is a micro-roastery with boutique coffee shops located in Muizenberg and Newlands. They are all about “good vibes only” and if you have a gander at their Instagram page you will not only find their love of coffee but also surfing. From beans to boards, this is worth a stop if you are a surfer, or just love the ocean and want to be with the waves while enjoying your preferred coffee.

Hans and Lloyd

St. James

Folk Café in St. James offers a bit of everything, but this is what makes them another go-to.
While there is food and beer available, let’s chat about the coffee, which as their website explains is their “blood and passion”. While they roast their beans, under the name “Espresso Concepts”, and offer perfectly blended cups to drink, they also supply beans, which you can order online. They also stand for ethically and sustainably sourced products and welcome anyone, from family to friends, to come and create memories and have fun while being nourished by good food and drinks.

Folk Cafe

Kalk Bay

Olympia Café and Bakery in Kalk Bay is described as an “institution”, but not in any way you’d think. The only thing fishy about it is that it’s one of the familiar favourites of Kalk Bay. Not only does it offer delectable seafood dishes, from mussels to tuna, but it also caters to almost any taste, from meat eaters to vegetarians. You can’t go wrong here if you live in Kalk Bay or want to visit it with coffee that’s been described as some of the best around.

Olympia Café

Whether you want to walk or take a bit of drive, a great cup of coffee won’t be hard to come by during your stay in the Cape. It all depends on what mood you are in, whether you want somewhere quiet, quaint, bustling and energetic, surf and sea, or ethnic and cultural, your cup of coffee won’t judge.

Oh and did we mention this is the oldest wine-producing region in the Southern Hemisphere?

In this post, we share some of our favourite wine farms in the Constantia Wine Route:

1) Steenberg Vineyards

Steenberg Vineyards

Steenberg Vineyards may have a rich history dating back to 1682 but this wine farm is the last word in modern Cape luxury, especially as far as our local wine farms go.

Here, you can find a five-star hotel and spa, an 18-hole golf course, two excellent restaurants and of course, some incredible wines. Steenberg’s Sauvignon Blanc, in particular, is highly acclaimed.

2) Constantia Glen

Constantia Glen

Constantia Glen is a beautiful, boutique wine farm that is perfectly positioned below Constantia Nek.

Not only is driving to this wine farm its own unique adventure but the wine farm itself offers so much for its guests to savour.

They are famous for their wines and platters but the restaurant is another unmissable attraction. Just book in advance, especially on weekends, as this eyecatching estate’s restaurant and tasting room can get very busy!

3) Constantia Uitsig

Constantia Uitsig

Something of a hidden gem in the Constantia Wine Route, Constantia Uitsig is a wonderful wine farm for families in particular to explore.

Excellent wine aside, this tranquil wine farm is home to a thrilling bike park, a stunning tasting room, two lovely eateries and a great Heritage Market, which offers everything from vegan dishes to ice-cream, cakes and sushi too.

4) Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia

As the oldest producing wine farm in South Africa, Groot Constantia is arguably one of the most well-known too.

This beautiful, historic estate is not just loved for its Cape heritage though - because it offers excellent wines, a wine and gift shop, museum and cellar tours and two lovely restaurants to boot.

Be sure to check this Cape Town wine farm icon off your travel bucket list.

Christmas Markets around Cape Town (2023)

Christmas Eggs

While Christmastime in South Africa means sunshine, braais (barbeques) and everything nice, in recent years, Cape Town has found ways to add its own spin on the festive season and incorporate festive cheer without the white Christmas, gluhwein or ice skating.

Its local festive or craft markets are a particular delight, helping you soak up the festive atmosphere, shop for last-minute gifts and create special core memories with your loved ones.

In this post, we share some of the best Christmas markets to enjoy around Cape Town this festive season:

Edgemead Christmas Market

Edgemead Christmas Market

Since its establishment in 2001, the Edgemead Christmas Market has acquired something of a legendary status over the years.

This popular annual festive market is one of the Mother City’s most highly anticipated, beloved Christmas markets - and for good reason!

Each year, the market sees more than 200 of the Cape’s finest stalls and crafters travel to the Mother City from as far as Riversdale, Montagu and even George to exhibit their festive goods.

Immerse yourself in this fun, free market that runs from 1-24 December 2023 at the Edgemead Community Hall, Edgemead Drive, off Bosmansdam Road, Edgemead. Please check online for market hours.

Gift Market Strand

Gift Market Strand

If you’re looking for a fabulous festive market outside of Cape Town, then you can’t go wrong with the Gift Market Strand.

This market runs from 24 November - 23 December 2023 so be sure to check it out this festive season! Please check online for market hours.

Pinelands Craft and Gift Fair

Pinelands Craft and Gift Fair

For Southern Suburbs dwellers (and even those beyond), the Pinelands Craft and Gift Fair is a truly unmissable festive event.

Held at Pinelands High School’s Kent Hall, this annual festive market is a popular cashless market that allows visitors and locals alike a wonderful opportunity to do some gift shopping in a serene, friendly environment.

The market offers gifts and goods from some 200 crafters, one central pay-point (equipped with credit card facilities) and a streamlined exit, helping shoppers make quick work of their festive gift shopping and market browsing!

This year, you can visit the market from 9-23 December 2023. Please check online for market hours.

Simply Gifts Market

Simply Gifts Market

Lastly, for the avid gift shoppers among us, there is the Simply Gifts Market. This annual gift and craft market, held at Sans Souci High School, Newlands, is a family-focused event run by Pam and Peter Goslett.

With more than 22 years collective, crafting experience between them, it’s safe to say their latest market venture is in good hands!

What’s more, this indoor market is the perfect place to browse local exhibitors’ stalls, as you enjoy a thoroughly relaxing shopping experience.

Fun, water-based activities to enjoy at Hout Bay Harbour

Seal Snorkeling

Whether you love curling along Chapman’s Peak Drive, dining on fresh fish and chips near the sea or simply exploring Cape Town’s coastline with your friends and family, Hout Bay is one of the Mother City’s most vibrant, activity-centric suburbs.

Blessed with a tight-knit community, stunning ocean- and mountain-scenery and a host of local attractions found in and around Hout Bay, there is no shortage of travel excitement and beauty to be savoured in this scenic seaside suburb.

In this post, we share some fun, water-based activities to enjoy at the tranquil Hout Bay Harbour:

Snorkel with the Seals

Seal swimming

While Hout Bay is well-known for its boat trips from the harbour out to Duiker Island (more fondly known as Seal Island), where you can watch the seals playfully swim around their very own island in the Atlantic Ocean or even just cuddle onshore together — did you know that, in Hout Bay, you can also hit the water and snorkel with the seals?

There are a number of different tour providers and operators who take clients out on this thrilling sea excursion but a great one to use is Sea Snorkeling Cape Town.

Generally, how it works is as follows: you book your snorkeling experience and, on the day, you are furnished with all necessary snorkeling gear and equipment. You are also given some basic training to ensure optimal safety and comfort in the water.

Swimming with Seals

You then have the incredible opportunity to dive into the clear blue waters and snorkel with these cute, inquisitive seals before enjoying some snacks and a hot drink back on the boat.

And, if your friends and family prefer to stay on the boat but still want to tag along on the day, you can book a spot for them to watch your sea adventure with the seals.

Keep in mind that trips are weather-dependent and booking is advised.

Before booking this experience, please also review the necessary terms and conditions.

Embark on an Exciting Sea Kayak Adventure

Kayak Hout Bay

Another exciting, water-based activity to enjoy in Hout Bay is sea kayaking. Once again, several local tour operators offer this experience, including the likes of well-known Cape Town Kayak Adventures.

Join them for a unique experience, as you get to explore the beautiful coastline. During your sea kayak outing, expect to see a diverse range of marine life. You may also get to say hi to the seals at the seal sanctuary and of course, as an added bonus, you have the chance to admire charming Chappies from the water.

Some of the marine life you may encounter includes: seals, dolphins, whales, sunfish and even penguins.

This experience runs daily (Monday to Sunday) - but it is weather-dependent and booking is advised.

Before booking and embarking on this sea kayak adventure, please remember to review all the terms and conditions.

Fly Above the Water with Foil Surfing

If you want to try something a bit more daring, then foil surfing is perfect for you.

With local tour operator, Efoil Cape Town, you can enjoy some fun around Hout Bay. Efoil’s foil surfing is like a cross between surfing and kiteboarding. Yet, better still, it is secure, fun and less taxing on your body.

Explore the coastline and fly above the water with this exciting experience.

Discover the Cape West Coast’s Delightful Dwarskersbos

Dwaarskebos Aerial

As far as sleepy, tranquil Cape West Coast villages go, Dwarskersbos is a rather undiscovered gem.

Popular as a holiday hub and seasonal whale watching destination, this enigmatic fishing village, found some two hours’ drive from Cape Town, offers the perfect blend of white sandy beaches, spectacular sunsets, outdoor adventures and beautifully preserved Cape charm and history.

In this post, we look at some of the best things to do and savour in dear Dwarskersbos, a true Cape West Coast beauty for locals and travellers to discover:

Stroll Along Pristine Beaches

Dwaarskebos Beach

Dwarskersbos is a famously beautiful seaside village, blessed with a wonderful array of sandy, white beaches, gorgeous views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and of course, popular seasonal whale watching.

It’s not just the whales who can be sighted here though - as Dwarskersbos is one of only a few destinations where you can sight the exceptionally rare Heaviside’s dolphin, a species native to Africa’s southwest coast.

So it’s a given that beach strolls (especially around sunset) are a must when visiting or staying in Dwarskersbos.

Savour the Special Coastline

In the humble fishing village of Dwarskersbos, there are also plenty of ocean-based activities, like kayaking and bodyboarding, to enjoy with your friends and family.

This peaceful village also offers some excellent fishing opportunities, so if you’re a keen fisherman, don’t forget to bring your fishing gear and rods along for the journey!

Explore the Scenic Rocherpan Nature Reserve

Dwaarskebos walks

If you prefer land-based adventures, why not lose yourself in the immense natural beauty of Dwarskersbos and its surrounds when you visit nearby Rocherpan Nature Reserve?

This coastal nature reserve is famous for its abundant, seasonal wildflowers and rich bird life. Situated some 25 kilometres north of Velddrif and some 10 kilometres from Dwarskersbos itself, Rocherpan is primarily a seasonal vlei (which is usually dried out from March to June) that offers a host of fun outdoor activities, including:

  • mountain biking on the adventurous jeep track;
  • picnicking (choose from the new braai area behind the bird hides or the lookout point near the beach);
  • shore angling (this is only allowed within the Rocherpan marine protected area; permits must be purchased at the closest post office and shown at reception when entering the reserve);
  • bird watching, of some 183 species, from one of three bird hides (note: bird spotting, especially of the 70 water bird species, is dependent on the water in the pans and is thus not guaranteed)
  • hiking (thanks to the reserve’s two short hiking trails; please book your hiking permits at reception)
  • dolphin and whale-spotting (usually seen here between June to November)
  • swimming in the eco-pool (reserved for overnight guests only)

For more information on permits, reserve entry fees and the overall experiences, please visit the Cape Nature website at: www.capenature.co.za
