Allegra Cafe and Life

This lovely cafe, located at Mainstream Mall and Village, has plenty of Italian flair. They serve everything from all-day breakfasts (unless they change their minds, that is!) to panini, Italian pastas, salads, homemade cakes and of course, good coffee.

According to online reviews, service is always friendly and attentive, so you’re in for both a good food experience and a quality dining treat in one.

Deus Cafe

Bringing something slightly more unconventional to the mix, Deus Cafe offers a somewhat more eclectic vibe than your traditional coffee shop. Yet, it still manages to create a welcoming and warm space for customers to enjoy good coffee and food.

Many of their visitors rave about their breakfasts, including their full English Breakfast or the Eggs Benedict (which, by default, comes on a zucchini base).

And, if you’re brave enough, ask about the ghost story and keep an eye out for the table that’s always set for two.

Owned by an Italian couple, Dario’s Cafe combines a casual, yet warm coffee bar-meets restaurant experience.

Hout Bay is one of Cape Town’s most beautiful, ocean-fronting suburbs. It’s popular among locals and travellers alike thanks to its natural beauty, attractions and rich history.

In fact, Hout Bay is even playfully considered its own republic! (It even has its own passport, as part of a fun tourism stunt.)

A Brief History of Hout Bay

Hout Bay, which is derived from the Dutch word Houtbaai (or Wood Bay), was so named by the Dutch settlers when they first explored this side of Table Mountain.

The valley, with its dense wooded areas, became a handy source of timber for repairing and building ships, as well as creating local buildings, including the famous Castle of Good Hope.

It’s believed that the name ‘Hout Bay’ dates back to 1653, although the fishing village was only properly established much later. Around 1867, in fact, when German immigrant, Jacob Trautmann, started to farm and fish in the beautiful valley.
Since then, Hout Bay has continued to thrive and flourish, expanding into a vast beautiful Cape Town suburb.

Hout Bay’s Watchful Last Leopard

If you ever heard of or visited Hout Bay, chances are you might have heard of the famous leopard statue that proudly surveys the town from a rocky perch.

This incredible bronze (now oxidised to a kind of teal colour) statue, which weighs 295 kilograms, was sculpted by Ivan Mitford-Barberton and placed here in March 1963.

The leopard was placed here as a solemn, yet sad reminder and nod to the leopards and other wild animals who once roamed the mountains of the Mother City. (The last leopard was seen on Little Lion’s Head in 1937, according to the Hout Bay Museum.)

The leopard statue might serve as a poignant memorial but it’s also a much-loved attraction in Hout Bay and one that adds to the suburb’s unique Cape history.

Delving into the Manganese Mine

It’s believed that manganese (a chemical element) has existed in the Cape since 1676 but manganese mining only began during the early 19th century. One of South Africa’s earliest recorded operations for this was the Hout Bay Manganese Mine, which was found on the mountainous slopes above Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Although the mine was a source of high quantities and was mined from May 1910 to May 1911 by the Hout Bay Manganese Ltd., the mine is understood to have been closed in 1912.

Not much remains of the mine today, barring its old concrete pillars and adits but the mine remains a part of Hout Bay’s unique history nonetheless.

Visit the Old East Fort

The East Fort Battery, which dates back to 1782, is one of four coastal fortifications that were built and developed in Hout Bay between 1781 and 1806 by the Vereenigde OostIndische Compagnie (VOC) or Dutch East India Company.

They were built by the government because, back in the day, Hout Bay was viewed as a weak spot that was vulnerable to possible marine invasion from the South.

Today, when you drive along Chappies, you can see the ruins of the old blockhouse to the left and the battery of guns down the path on the right (if you’re driving up from Hout Bay side).

The East Fort is also still explorable to this day. Just follow the easy walking trail up to it and enjoy the incredible views and unique history from this ruin.

Hooked on Africa Fishing Charters

One true fishing charter in Cape Town, mind, is Hooked on Africa.

In fact, they consider themselves to be South Africa’s best reviewed deep sea fishing and big game fishing charter and Hooked on Africa is happily based in Hout Bay, Cape Town.

For conventional deep sea (off-shore) fishing, Hooked on Africa can take you out to enjoy the tuna season (which runs from mid-October to June); to Cape Point (allowing you to see this famous Cape Town attraction from the sea) to fish for the Cape Yellowtail; or even to find snoek, which are apparently the only fish available during our winter months up until September.

Their fishing experience is ideal for everyone, even novices, so don’t be shy to give them a call.

Cape Boat Charters

With over 20 years experience at sea, Cape Boat Charters knows all there is to know about deep sea fishing in Cape Town.

They are located in the calmer False Bay waters in Simon’s Town, only a half an hour’s ride away from Cape Point, where most of their game fish get caught.

Aside from their deep sea fishing experiences, Cape Boat Charters also offers pelagic bird watching charters off Cape Point and scenic boat trips to the famous Seal Island and its surrounds.

It’s the only commercial whisky distillery in Africa and the home of true South African whiskies.

Situated next to a Puma petrol station, Vygevallei Farmstall makes for a convenient pitstop along the West Coast’s R27.

Weskus Spens Padstal

First opened in April 1992, Weskus Spens Padstal has stood the test of time. Situated 10 kilometres from Vredenburg and 20 kilometres from Velddrif, this charming farm stall has become famous over the years as the oldest farm stall along the R27.

To this day, they are also famous for having the ‘best bread in the West’, which they have been lovingly producing for over two decades now.

In addition to their famous breads and brand, Weskus Spens also offers delicious breakfasts, pies and more. There’s a great outdoor garden area, complete with a kid-friendly jungle gym to ensure a family-friendly experience from start to finish.

Africa’s biggest running event, the famous Two Oceans Marathon (or, TOM), is an exciting race weekend that promises race day jitters, family day activities, beautiful scenery, excitement from start to finish and more.

This historic race, which has been taking place since 1970 and is now in its 53rd edition, draws thousands of local and international guests, supporters and fans alike. Run from the bottom of Dean Street, Newlands to the UCT rugby fields (Groote Schuur Estate), this stunning running race takes runners and supports on an incredible journey across the Mother City.

In this post, we share some historic facts about the Two Oceans Marathon, showcase its scenic route and look at where to watch and cheer on the 2024 entrants from.

An Overview of the Two Oceans Marathon’s History

Since the first edition of the Two Oceans Marathon on 2 May 1970 (although it was only officially named that in 1972), this Cape Town-based running race has come a long way and has firmly cemented itself in the hearts and minds of runners and supporters from the world over.

While the race was originally intended to be a training run for the perhaps more iconic
Comrades Marathon, it has turned itself into an annual attraction (usually synonymous with Easter weekend) that now attracts more than 9000 entrants. Not bad for a humble race beginning with just 26 runners and an entry fee of 50 cents back in 1970!

Today, the race is famously hailed as Africa’s biggest running event and has a huge impact on the Western Cape’s economy, contributing some R672 million to it annually.

But it’s not just about the economic impact this race has because the Two Oceans Marathon is now considered a weekend of family fun, exciting race moments and unique experiences for runners, their loved ones and of course, spectators to enjoy!

The 1970s saw some historic moments for the race — including the first female entrant, the first black entrants and winner and the first permanent blue number — and, since the 1980s to the more recent 2010s, the race has continued to grow in size, popularity and key moments! There have been last-gasp victories, many smashed records and even the wettest race in TOM history.

What makes the race so memorable though is its spectacular scenery that gives both entrants and their supporters a first-hand glimpse of the Mother City’s natural beauty!

The Ultra Marathon (although there is also the Half Marathon and some excellent Fun Runs) takes runners and supporters from the heart of the Southern Suburbs through to Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Noordhoek, along Chapman's Peak, Hout Bay, Constantia Nek, Newlands and everywhere in between before ending at UCT’s rugby fields.

Along the way, there’s ocean vistas, leafy suburbs and mesmerising mountain scenery to enjoy.

Markets are always fun! There’s so much to see and do walking through a variety of stalls, from fresh produce, fine foods, delicious coffees, handmade goodies, and usually live music that sets the tone for a buzzing morning, whether with friends or family. So, if you’re on holiday in the Western Cape or just passing through on a weekend, give the local markets some love.

5 Cape Markets

Below are five markets worth exploring. While some are closer, in Hout Bay, and conveniently located only a few kilometres from all three of our Hout Bay units (Harbour View, The Boardwalk, and Riverview), others are a bit further afield but will allow you to get a glimpse of the beautiful Cape scenery. Let us start with Hout Bay.

Bay Harbour Market

Known as “Cape Town’s Most Vibrant Market”, it is in a fish factory on Harbour Road, but we promise there is nothing fishy about it! The market caters to everyone, supplying delicious foods, from sweet to savoury, sushi to waffles, and almost everything in between. Enjoy a morning coffee or if you’re a juice person, you can opt for one freshly prepared. For the beer lovers out there, you can get your beverage at the Boom Bar, which is a full-service bar.

While you have food taken care of, you can enjoy offers that range from arts and crafts to fashion, beauty, wellness, and décor with live music. The Bay Harbour Market is open on Fridays from 5 pm to 9 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30 am to 4 pm. More details can be found on their website or social media channels.

Hout Bay Village Market

What used to be the Lion’s Club Craft Market is now the Hout Bay Village Market, located in Mainstream Park (opposite the Mainstream Mall). It is only about a minute’s drive away from our Riverview Hout Bay unit. With food stalls available to your tastes, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll outside, experiencing a variety of arts and crafts by artists who handmade their products. The Hout Bay Village Market believes it’s “not just about shopping; it’s about creating an experience”.

It is open every Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm, depending on the weather conditions. Additionally, it operates during seasonal times, namely Spring, Summer, and Autumn. You can bring along your whole family and it is also pet friendly.

First Fruits Farmers Market

Situated on Valley Road in Hout Bay, the First Fruit Farmers Market fosters a sense of community and gives small business owners a boost. If you’re looking to enjoy the outdoors brimming with beautiful scenery this will be an enjoyable early morning treat. You can also picnic and bring your dogs (on leashes). The market is open once a month on the first Saturday of every month, from 9 am to 2 pm. Bring the whole family and pets are also permitted.

Lourensford Market

If you want to expand a little bit beyond the city limits and take a drive to enjoy the Cape scenery, why not try The Lourensford Market on the Lourensford Wine Estate in Helderberg, Somerset West? It’s over an hour from Hout Bay and offers over 60 stalls with a variety of foods and artisanal and artistic goods.

For the adults there is wine tasting. If you are a connoisseur, you can get a taste of the wines from the estate. For the kiddies, there is a variety of activities available. You can’t have a market without some live music, which you can enjoy and jam along. The market is open on Fridays, from 5 pm to 9 pm, Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market

Just under an hour away from Hout Bay, the Oranjezicht City Farm Market at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (V&A) is a great option if you want to explore the city bowl a bit more while on your trip. The market brings “urban farming” to life and offers locally produced food with various options that include vegetarian, vegan, dairy, sugar, wheat gluten-free, and more.

The market is open on Saturdays from 8.15 am to 2 pm and Sundays from 9 am to 2 pm. There is also the Wednesday night market that runs until April 2024 from 5 pm to 9 pm. Pets are also allowed here but on leashes and well-mannered.

Chilled Market at the Range (Tokai)

Come and chill at the Chilled Market at the Range in Tokai, it’s about 25 minutes away from Hout Bay. Explore some delicious homemade meals from pizzas to delicious sweet treats, and beverages that cater to everyone from those who love their craft beers, which are on tap, and those who enjoy an evening wine, and more!

The kiddies can come too and have a blast at the play area while you enjoy a stroll through the stalls. Paired with some live music, and indoor or outdoor seating, it’s a fun-filled Friday evening outing that opens on Friday evenings from 4.30 pm to 9.30 pm.

Just a few options to choose from, some within walkable distance away and others requiring a scenic drive out, but either way it’s a fresher alternative, shall we say, to get your fruits and veggies, and some local gifts and goodies, during your stay here.
