POP! The Best Local Bubblies for the Festive Season!

What a YEAR! 2020 Has very much been a traumatising lesson in human fragility and dogged perseverance…so much so that although the festive season is practically upon us, it doesn’t feel like we should be celebrating. But celebrate you should because you made it. And WOW does that deserve a quality glass of bubbles! So, in honour of the end of one of the worst years it feels like we’ve ever faced down, here is a list of gorgeous local bubbly wines we recommend you stock your cellars with!

(Please note that price varies from retail outlet to retail outlet and serves only as an approximation.)

Light yeasty aromas and tones of citrus, fresh picked red apples with a rich creamy complexity and cherries on the palate. The exceptionally fine mousse contributes freshness and finesse.
In terms of bottle design, the gang at Black Elephant Vintners decided to strip off all the bling that is so commonly associated with sparkling wines and the result is this sleek and seductive bottle that bears the wonderful nickname: the Michelle Obama.

10 Cape Wine Routes to Explore and Why! PART 2

Welcome to the second instalment of dk villas’ two-part blog series on the Cape’s stunning wine routes. Award-winning wine and beautiful food experiences are just two of the many, many attractions one can expect to experience on any foray into the Cape Winelands. Last week, we explored:

  1. Stellenbosch
  2. Franschhoek
  3. Paarl
  4. Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and
  5. Elgin

Now, let’s dive into Constantia, Durbanville, the Robertson Valley, Breedekloof, and the Helderberg wine routes.

6. Constantia Wine Valley

www.constantiawineroute.com

Constantia Glen Wine Estate
Image: Constantia Glen Wine Estate, Constantia (www.pixabay.com)

The historic, near-legendary Constantia Valley offers visitors ten excellent reasons to visit is verdant, lushly carpeted valley and mountain slopes. 10 Beautiful wine estates, all of which deliver an intoxicating blend of wine, old world romance, history, delicious food, and heart-rending views. From the hallowed cellars at Groot Constantia (the Cape’s oldest wine farm) and Klein Constantia (the creator of the famous sweet wine, Vin de Constance) to Silvermist Vineyards, where you’ll find the award-winning La Colombe (voted one of the world’s best restaurants)…a trip to Constantia is a multi-sensory feast.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Stunning forest and mountain hiking, zip-lining with SA Forest Adventures, nature viewing and birdwatching, luxury stays, picnics, bicycle vineyard tours, and more.

7. Durbanville Wine Route

www.durbanvillewine.co.za

Durbanville wine route
Image: Durbanville wine route (www.pixabay.com)

With unparalleled views of rolling hills, the Atlantic coastline, and Table Mountain, Durbanville is a lesser explored yet no less awesome wine route to check out! Here, you can expect to discover truly exceptional food, quality wine, and both boutique (Klein Roosboom) and major commercial wineries (Durbanville Hills) that offer guests hours of hedonistic leisure. Also, the area is a cool climate region—similar to Constantia and Elgin—owing to the onshore flow of cool maritime air from the Atlantic Ocean. This is why Durbanville carries a lofty reputation for growing Sauvignon Blanc!

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Parkrun at Meerendal Wine Estate, annual music and cultural festivals, olive products and beer tasting at Hillcrest Olive & Wine Estate, food pairing experiences, overnight stays, and more.

8. Robertson Wine Valley

www.robertsonwinevalley.com

Robertson Wine Valley
Image: Robertson Wine Valley (www.robertsonwinevalley.com)

The Robertson Wine Valley is a gorgeous, mountain-embraced valley carpeted in lush vineyard and dotted with quaint towns. It’s also a stellar winemaking region that embraces 53 different wineries in the towns of Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor, and Robertson. Here, there is a definite culture of delivering wine experiences that allow visitors to take in and enjoy the area’s natural beauty, as well as its local culture, art, and food, from underground cellar tastings, and one-of-a-kind food pairings to blend-your-own-wine experiences, lawn games, and so much more.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Historic cellar tours and tastings at Weltevrede Wine Estate and Esona Boutique Winery, annual festivals along the Brede River, antique shopping, river cruises and picnics at Viljoensdrift, wine blending at Excelsior, luxury stays, and more.

9. Breedekloof Wine Route

www.breedekloof.com

Image: Breedekloof Wine Valley (www.breedekloof.com)

Slightly further afield of Cape Town, the Breedekloof wine route consists of 22 wineries—from humble boutiques to sprawling estates—scattered in and around Rawsonville, Slanghoek, Goudini, and Breede River areas. Here, the vibe is distinctly more rustic and “country” with a plethora of luxury accommodations, wine and food experiences, and leisure activities and excursions. For example, at Slanghoek, guests can blend and bottle their own wines, while Jason’s Hill offers hiking trails in its gorgeous setting. Bergsig Estate is great for relaxed dining with spectacular vineyard and mountain views and Du Toitskloof Wines produces award-winning wines and craft beer.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Biking and hiking, craft beer tasting, Ceres zip slide tours, farm stalls, fly fishing, garden tours, craft gin tasting, picnics, horse riding, luxury stays, and more.

Image: View from Da Capo Vineyards (www.idiom.co.za)

One of the more neglected of the Cape’s wine routes lies within the Cape Helderberg basin; though tragically so because, here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful and special wineries, such as Vergelegen (one of the country’s oldest estates), Idiom (produces some unusual and delicious Italian varietal wine), Lourensford (hosts weekend markets, an art studio, and a coffee roastery), and Waterkloof (boasts stunning views over Gordon’s Bay and Strand). There’s also Morgenster, which offers olive oils tastings and chocolate pairings, and all of these wineries are set against the dramatic backdrop of the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountain ranges.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Picnics in camphor forests at Vergelegen, weekend markets, art and culture, annual wine and food festivals, olive oil tastings at Morgenster, luxury stays, and so much more.

10 Cape Wine Routes to Explore and Why! PART 1

Quarantine is behind us, summer is here, the festive season is upon us, and we have some of the most beautiful wine in the world…does anyone need any more reasons to pack the friend and/or family in the car and hit the Cape winelands? No! Let’s explore the Cape’s manifold wine routes and some of the exciting activities, attractions, and adventures they have to offer. (You know, besides food and wine.)

1. Stellenbosch Wine Route

www.visitstellenbosch.org

Simonsberg mountain, Stellenbosch
Image: Simonsberg mountain, Stellenbosch (www.tokara.com)

Stellenbosch is undoubtedly the most famous, internationally known, and well trodden of the Cape’s wine routes. Postcard scenery of rolling vineyard-carpeted hills set against a backdrop of dramatically rugged mountains is the order of the day here…unless, of course, you wander into the heart of this historic settlement. Then you can expect centuries-old oak-lined streets, beautiful old buildings built in the Cape Dutch style, and monuments immortalizing the town’s (and country’s) history and heritage. Stellenbosch is internationally known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc, and, Pinotage, a unique varietal to South Africa.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Historic walking tours, tuk tuk tours of the wineries, retail therapy on Dorp and Andringa Streets, art galleries, Stellenbosch Museum, hiking trails in the surrounding mountains, and strawberry picking (in season)!

2. Franschhoek Wine Route

www.franschhoek.org.za

Franschhoek Wine Route
Image: Huguenot Monument, Franschhoek (www.pixabay.com)

If you thought Stellenbosch was beautiful and special—and it absolutely is—Franschhoek manages to go one echelon higher with its truly spectacular mountain-framed scenery and beguiling historic heart, which was originally established by the French Huguenots (hence the name “French Corner”). Obviously, being the Cape Winelands, top activities to do here are wine tasting and fine dining BUT Franschhoek deserves a special mention because it has earned a reputation for being the food and wine capital of the Cape! These winelands are particularly known for their glorious Méthode Cap Classiques (MCCs) and French varietal wines and styles.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Luxurious overnight stays, the Franschhoek wine tram, several annual wine festivals, the Huguenot Memorial and museum, retail therapy, art galleries, weekend markets, and hiking in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve.

3. Paarl Wine Route

www.paarlonline.com

Paarl Wine Route
Image: Avondale Wine Estate, Paarl Winelands (www.avondalewine.co.za)

Paarl is the more rustic cousin to the likes of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Here, frills, fuss, and French charm are roughly exchanged for the kind of honest, country goodness that we all, at heart, find so endearing. Paarl (Afrikaans for “Pearl”) gets its name from the bulbous granite extrusion that stands sentry over the town and whose constituent minerals make it glitter in the sunlight. This historic town and area features several exceptional wineries such as Avondale, Babylonstoren, Fairview, and Mellasat. The town is also home to a plethora of historic attractions and top-notch restaurants.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Farm stays, hiking in the Paarl Nature Reserve, bird watching and nature viewing, hot air ballooning, wine-and-food pairing experiences, golfing at Pearl Valley Golf Course, and safari tours.

4. Hemel-en-Aarde Valley / Hermanus Wine Route

Hemel-en-Aarde
Image: Bouchard Finlayson Wine Estate, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (www.bouchardfinlayson.com)

Just over an hour’s drive up the southwestern Cape coastline of the continent, you’ll discover undulating lands of such bucolic splendour you’ll be forgiven for thinking you fell through a wormhole and landed somewhere in the Austrian countryside. Here, framed, by the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean, are a clutch of wineries that produce delicious and consistently award-winning wines, such as Bouchard Finlayson, Creation, Ataraxia, Newton Johnson, and more. The area is particularly known for its cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir!

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): This whole stretch of coastline is famous for whale watching and other ocean attractions and sports, like fishing, sailing, kayaking, and more. Hiking, biking, and outdoor adventures are the order of the day when you’re not indulging in fine wine and food.

Elgin
Image: Paul Cluver Wine Estate, Elgin (www.cluver.com)

An hour’s drive outside of Cape Town, Elgin is best known for its fruit industry (apple orchards, in particular) but there are also more than a dozen wine farms here. In fact, many wineries in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and further afield source grapes in the Elgin Valley because it’s known for its beautiful cool climate varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnays. Sone of the more popular farms are the family-run Paul Cluver Wines, which is part of a UNESCO world heritage site; South Hill Vineyards, which is home to a fabulous art gallery and luxury accommodation; and Charles Fox Cap Classique Estate, a go-to winery for bubbly-lovers.

Top things to do (besides wine tasting and fine dining): Stunning forest and mountain hiking and biking trails and scenery, zip-lining with Cape Canopy Tours, nature viewing and birdwatching, weekend stays, guided farm walks, and picnics.

Stay tuned for Part 2, coming next week….

We’ve got even more stunning wine routes to explore so tune in next week for part two of our blog series!

dk villas adds another property to their portfolio of luxury getaways!

Let’s be honest. It’s been a pretty sh*t year, especially for those in the tourism and hospitality business. But rather than bemoan fate, the team here at dk villas decided to do what millions of people around the world do when they’re feeling glum: we indulged in a little retail therapy. Except, instead of buying new shoes, jewellery, or a car…we bought an apartment!

That’s right, the dk villas family is growing by another member and we’re proud to present to you the fourth jewel in our crown: our one-bedroom, one bathroom apartment at River View, Hout Bay.

Introducing dk villas # 4

River View is the perfect home-away-from-home for a single traveller or a couple. While it’s yet to receive the “dk villa” treatment (a full design overhaul and refurbishment), its bones are strong and location ideal. The lounge and kitchen are open plan with a stunning view out onto a spacious patio and Hout Bay’s dramatic mountainscape as a backdrop. Framing this drama is a bougainvillea, which bursts gaudily into bloom for most of the year.

In terms of the interior design inspiration, Petra de Kock, who is the visionary behind dk villas’ trademark style, said this: “French flair, a touch rustic, with earthy tones – a very relaxing atmosphere!” Petra and her husband and business partner Johann have already begun the fun task of furniture shopping for the new luxury apartment.

And finally, the cherry on top: the complex has a communal pool, which guests will find a real boon in the hotter summer months (given that the nearby Atlantic Ocean at Hout Bay beach is toe-numbingly cold all year round).

Things to do and see in Hout Bay

Hout Bay Harbour

With dk villas’ River View apartment being located a short stone’s throw from Hout Bay’s main road and beach, you could scarcely find a more convenient location from which to explore the treasures of this historic valley.

For starters, right across the road, there’s (in our opinion) the very BEST authentic Italian gelato you’ll find in the entire city, if not the country (at “Ice Dream”). Then, there’s Hout Bay beach, a long stretch of sugary white sand embraced on either side by striking mountain scenery: the world famous Chapman’s Peak to the east and the Sentinel to the west.

The harbour area itself is the beating heart of this historic fishing village and there are plenty of restaurants, fish and chip shops, and local arts and crafts markets to explore. But if it’s the bracing sea air you’re after, the harbour’s piers are long and accessible…just keep a respectful distance from the sea lions that like to hang out there!

This is just the tip of the ice berg: Hout Bay’s harbour market has become a huge, city-wide hit with locals and tourists alike; and there’s a gin distillery AND a brewery right next door. But if you’re more of a wine person, Hout Bay has a couple of wineries to experience (Hout Bay Vineyards, for example) and the nearby historic Constantia wine route, which has 10 wine farms.

Back in Hout Bay, there’s no shortage of fabulous restaurants to dine at, from the cheap and casual takeaway joints to the absolutely legendary La Colombe, which has been voted amongst the world’s 50 best restaurants for several years!

On re-opening after COVID-19

As Johann de Kock says: “The best view comes after the hardest climb.”

COVID-19 brought our tourism industry to a standstill. Dk villas had to be creative to get bookings and while long-term tenants have been an option, we are positive that after all these restrictions, people will want to travel again. And we can’t wait to welcome them back!

“We have always wanted to expand,” explains Johann. “We were just waiting for the right moment. The COVID-19 hard lockdown in South Africa might not have seemed to be that perfect moment but it made us think: what’s the way forward? As they say, the hardest times often lead to the greatest moments of your life. Stay positive – which is definitely something both of us are! And it will be SO worth it in the end!”

Watch this space!

Johann and Petra de Kock
Husband-and-wife “team dk villas”: Johann and Petra de Kock

The team here at dk villas is incredibly proud and excited to be adding this fourth property to our luxury accommodation portfolio. And we'll be sure to keep you in the loop as we make progress on the refurbishment and interior design…so watch this space.

Remember: difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations, and certainly Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa is exactly that: a beautiful destination!

Eating Out in Hout Bay

Great Ideas for (a Safe) Halloween in Cape Town!

Usually, Halloween in Cape Town is packed with all kinds of thrilling, spooky activities, from the annual Zombie Walk to the South African Horrorfest movie festival. This year, for reasons we’re all too familiar with (and thoroughly tired of), Halloween will have to be a more subdued affair…but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Here are some great ideas for keeping the spirits alive this Halloween.

Turn your home into a haunted house

You can go all out and transform your entire home or apartment into a house of horrors or perhaps just do a single room or room-and-hallway combo. The task is to take your perfectly happy environment and transform it into scene from Poltergeist or Saw! A severed limb here, a headless doll there, hairy spiders and cobwebs in every corner, and cocktails the colour of blood…the possibilities are endless! Use your imagination and get crafty. Then, invite your friends/family “bubble” over for an evening in a classic haunted house!

You could even work on a display for outside your home (think: carved pumpkins and unspeakable things made from papier-mâché) so that anyone who drives past will be struck with the spirit of Halloween.

Indulge in a horror movie binge

Indulge in a horror movie binge

Rather than lament the fact that you can’t do the usual late-night social gathering this Halloween, why not plan a binge night of horror films? You can even embellish the occasion with Halloween inspired snacks (check out 37 Halloween Snacks That Will Make You Forget Adults Don't Trick-or-Treat for inspiration).

Here are some great ideas for horror movies:

For people who love the classics…

  • Psycho (1960)
  • The Exorcist (1973)
  • Jaws (1975)
  • Alien (1979)
  • The Shining (1980)
  • Poltergeist (1982)

For zombie apocalypse aficionados…

  • Night of the Living Dead (1968)
  • Dawn of the Dead (1978)
  • The Evil Dead (1981)
  • I am Legend (2007)
  • Zombieland (2009)
  • World War Z (2013)

Off-the-wall horror films…

  • Beetlejuice (1988)
  • Shaun of the Dead (2004)
  • Rubber (2010)
  • Zombeavers (2014)
  • What we do in the Shadows (2014)

For families with younger kids…

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  • Monster House (2006)
  • Coraline (2009)
  • Hotel Transylvania (2012)
  • ParaNorman (2012)
  • The Addams Family (2019)

Seriously scary…in our opinion!

  • The Blair Witch Project (1999)
  • The Ring (2002)
  • Paranormal Activity (2007)
  • Insidious (2010)
  • It Comes at Night (2017)
  • Hereditary (2019)
  • Host (2020)

Have a pumpkin carving competition

pumpkin carving

It’s not such a huge tradition in South Africa but it should be! Head on down to your local fruit and veg city to get your hands on several pumpkins—the large orange ones are the best—and get the whole family or friendship “bubble” to carve scary faces into them. Then, once they’re done, put a tea candle inside your pumpkin creations so that their faces glow at night. Make a competition out of it with a prize for the best winner!

South African HORRORFEST 2020

HORRORFEST

The South African HORRORFEST is the longest running and only event of its kind in the country (if not the continent) featuring new, classic and rare movies, pre-release screenings, dark literature, live silent film soundtrack performance, Halloween dress-up, give-aways, and more. However, with COVID-19 still a threat, this year, the bulk of the 16th edition of the South African HORRORFEST will move online. To keep a finger on the pulse of the line-up, check out the official website for this much-loved annual Halloween festival!

Cape Town Zombie Walk

Cape Town Zombie Walk

We’re hesitant to mention the annual Cape Town Zombie Walk, which attracts to the streets of Cape Town literally hoards of people dressed up like zombies. But from the official Facebook page, it does appear as though this Halloween event is still going ahead (scheduled for Saturday 31st October 2020). If you are keen on attending, you should know that this is an event that draws large crowds of people close together. So WEAR A MASK (or incorporate it into your costume!) and bring hand sanitizer along with you so that you can frequently sanitize your hands. And avoid alcohol so that you can be responsible!

The Cape Town Zombie Walk is an exhilarating and unforgettable experience but with this year’s pandemic still a risk to public health, we urgently advise you to practice utmost caution.

Be safe and from the team here at dk villas, have a happy Halloween!

Escape to (even more) Destinations around the World with these Favourite Travel Movies

In May, dk villas published a blog with a list of some of our favourite travel movies, all of which are based and filmed in extraordinary destinations around the world. From Italy in Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) and Spain in Vicky, Christina, Barcelona (2008) to India in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012) and Thailand in The Beach (2000), these movies, for us, really evoke the countries in which they are filmed. And since a visit to these stunning places is, for at least the foreseeable future, off the table, we’re continuing to live vicariously through the characters in these beautiful films….

Amélie (2001)

Starring: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus

Amelie

Amélie is a fanciful and off-the-wall comedy about a young woman who discretely orchestrates the lives of the people around her, creating a world exclusively of her own making. Shot in over 80 Parisian locations, acclaimed director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen; The City of Lost Children) invokes his incomparable visionary style to capture the exquisite charm and mystery of modern-day Paris through the eyes of a beautiful ingenue.

Why we loved it: Beautifully filmed, completely captivating (and funny), and the most tender love story.

Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

Starring: Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem, Viola Davis, Billy Crudup, James Franco

Eat Pray Love

Based upon the exquisite real life story of author Elizabeth Gilbert, Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) thought she had everything she wanted in life: a home, a husband, and a successful career. Now, newly divorced and facing a turning point, she finds that she is confused about what is important to her. Daring to step out of her comfort zone, Liz embarks on a quest of self-discovery that takes her on a whirlwind journey through Italy, India, and Bali.

Why we loved it: Knowing that this is a real life story makes the movie even more captivating and the idea of uprooting your life to discover yourself and what’s really important, so inspiring.

Fly Away Home (1996)

Starring: Anna Paquin, Jeff Daniels, Dana Delany

Fly Away Home

After Amy (Anna Paquin) loses her mother in a car accident, she must uproot her life and move to Canada to live with her father, Thomas, (Jeff Daniels), an oddball inventor with whom she has no relationship. She initially struggles to find her place in her new home, but things change when she stumbles upon a collection of abandoned goose eggs. When the eggs hatch, Amy and her dad work together teaching the motherless birds to fly south for the winter, and their relationship blooms.

Why we loved it: Who doesn’t love a good animal movie with a happy ending? (Oops…spoiler alert).

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Starring: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Sean Penn

Mitty

Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), an employee at Life magazine, spends day after monotonous day developing photos for the publication. To escape the tedium, Walter inhabits a world of exciting daydreams in which he is the undeniable hero. Walter fancies a fellow employee named Cheryl (Kristen Wiig) and would love to date her, but he feels unworthy. However, he gets a chance to have a real adventure when Life's new owners send him on a mission to obtain the perfect photo for the final print issue.

Why we loved it: Quirky and funny without overstepping the boundary with slapstick, we loved this movie because of its truly entertaining performances and stunning portrayal of the “land of fire and ice”, Iceland!

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Starring: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Michael Sheen, Kathy Bates

Midnight in Paris

Gil Pender (Owen Wilson) is a screenwriter and aspiring novelist. Vacationing in Paris with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams), he has taken to touring the city alone. On one such late-night excursion, Gil encounters a group of strange, yet familiar revellers, who sweep him along, apparently back in time, for a night with some of the Jazz Age's icons of art and literature. The more time Gil spends with these cultural heroes of the past, the more dissatisfied he becomes with the present.

Why we loved it: Given the chance, who wouldn’t travel back in time in Paris to meet such famous people as Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway? We loved the way these characters were brought to life! And, of course, Paris is heartbreakingly beautiful.

Whale Rider (2002)

Starring: Keisha Castle-Hughes, Vicky Haughton, Grant Roa, Rawiri Paratene

Only males are allowed to ascend to chiefdom in a Maori tribe in New Zealand. This ancient custom is upset when the child selected to be the next chief dies at birth. However his twin sister, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes), survives. At age 12, she enlists the help of her grandmother (Vicky Haughton) and the training of her uncle (Grant Roa) to claim her birthright. But to break with convention, she'll have to do the impossible: win over her ultra-traditional grandfather (Rawiri Paratene).

Why we loved it: This heartfelt movie provides audiences with a rare glimpse into the culture and heritage of New Zealand’s Maori people. It’s an exquisite and beautifully filmed movie too.

In Bruges (2008)

Starring: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Clémence Poésy

In Bruges

After a particularly difficult job, hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) head to Belgium to hide out until things cool down. Ray hates the medieval city they land in, but Ken finds its beauty and peacefulness enchanting. Their experiences become increasingly surreal and possibly life-changing as they encounter tourists, locals, an American dwarf, and a potential romance for Ray.

Why we loved it: In Bruges has a wonderful, wicked, and dry sense of humour that we love; but also, together with the characters, it takes you on a tour of this beguiling historic city that we have now added to our bucket list.

Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade (1989)

Starring: Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Alison Doody, River Phoenix, Julian Glover

The intrepid explorer Indiana Jones sets out to rescue his father, a medievalist who has vanished while searching for the Holy Grail. Following clues in the old man's notebook, Indy arrives in Venice, where he enlists the help of a beautiful academic, but they are not the only ones who are on the trail, and some sinister old enemies soon come out of the woodwork. The final part of the movie shoots at the famous Petra rock-cut temple in Jordan, a bucket list destination if there ever were one!

Why we loved it: They simply don’t make swashbuckling adventures like this anymore! And the fact that the movie is filmed in several beautiful international destinations, like Italy and Jordan, really satisfies the wanderlust.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

Starring: Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce, Bill Hunter

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

When drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, he invites fellow queens Adam (Guy Pearce) and Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. In their colourful bus, named Priscilla, the three performers travel across the Australian Outback performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship.

Why we loved it: We laughed at the outrageous characters, costumes, and performances in this movie; and it was a fascinating romp through miles and miles of hostile Australian Outback, and getting to meet the people of Alice Springs.

A Good Year (2006)

Starring: Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard, Abbie Cornish, Freddie Highmore

A Good Year

Successful but arrogant London banker Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) inherits his uncle's (Albert Finney) vineyard in Provence, where he spent many childhood holidays. He travels to France to sell off the property but soon falls in love with the place, discovering a new laid-back lifestyle as he tries to renovate the estate to be sold. Upon his arrival, he also meets a woman from California who tells Max she is his long-lost cousin and that the property is hers.

Why we loved it: Travel, wine, and a feel-good love story…need we say more?

Designed by golf architect Peter Matkovich and overlooking the Indian Ocean from its panoramic cliff-top position, the Pinnacle Point Golf Course is a unique and scenic masterpiece. The 18-hole golf course has a challenging layout that follows the contours of Mossel Bay’s dramatic landscape. “I was very anxious to play at De Zalze because it hosted the World Amateur in 2006 and I can say I was not disappointed. Not only is it a great golf course and very well-maintained but also has great golf holes and views of the mountain and winelands together.”
– Javier Pintos (reviewer on www.top100golfcourses.com)

Yet another masterpiece by prolific golf architect Peter Matkovich, the De Zalze course sprawls out in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands, on the 750-acre Spier Estate, in the shadow of the Helderberg Mountains. This pleasant parklands-style course (played to a par of 72) was originally opened in 2001 and, in 2006, co-hosted the prestigious biennial World Amateur Championships. Nearby, De Kleine Zalze winery offers a fantastic watering hole to refresh and refuel.

What dk villas is doing to keep our guests SAFE!

In an effort to encourage local travel and fuel the guttering tourism industry, dk villas has extended its “keep LOCAL alive” special, which is valid for travel until next year, 30th September 2021. This is in addition to the special discounts, cancellation policy amendment, and impeccable safety standards the luxury apartment company is offering guests, all in an effort to keep South Africa’s tourism industries burning brightly!

New temporary cancellation policy

We’re living in an era in which one can safely expect the unexpected, and because of that, trip cancellation is an unfortunate possibility. This pretty much sums up the conundrum South Africans face at the moment: we want to travel and we want to support local tourism and businesses…but how can we shoulder the risk of losing our deposits or even full payments on a “staycation” when we’re all feeling the pinch of the current economic downturn?

Dk villas solution to this conundrum is a cancellation policy amendment that offers a full refund for bookings at any of the company’s three luxury properties in the event that the government reinstates a level 3 or 4 lockdown and guests have to cancel their stays.

“Our goal is to protect our guests,” explains Petra de Kock, co-founder and owner of dk villas (and the genius behind every apartment’s sublime interior design). “We don’t think it’s fair that guests should lose out because of COVID-19. At the same time, we want to encourage local travel, and so we amended our cancellation policy to do that.”

Dk villas’ new temporary cancellation policy is designed to protect guests (and their 50% deposits) from the unexpected, which means that they can confidently book their holidays risk-free, knowing that even if the country returns to lockdown, they’ll get their money back.

Impeccable sanitation and WTTC Safe Travels accreditation

Another way in which dk villas is keeping its guests safe is by adhering to all the COVID-19 guidelines laid out by the local and global health authorities. And thoroughly sanitizing every square inch of each apartment before guest arrival is just one (very important) aspect of the job!

“We’ve always maintained very high standards for hygiene,” says Johann de Kock, co-founder and owner of dk villas, loving husband to Petra, and self-confessed perfectionist. “When we travel, we expect to find everything 100% clean and in perfect working order and so we maintain these standards in our own properties. Now, however, we’ve taken sanitation to obsessive levels to keep our guests safe and healthy.”

To echo these sentiments, dk villas was recently accredited by the WTTC Safe Travels, which was launched by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) earlier this year in response to the pandemic. This, the world’s first ever-global safety and hygiene stamp, allows travellers to recognise governments and businesses not only in South Africa but also around the world that have adopted health and hygiene global standardised protocols…all in the name of safe travel.
