To celebrate this magnificent city, we have put together a list of fun facts about Cape Town that may surprise you. Expand your knowledge about the beautiful Mother City with these interesting tidbits. Here are 10 surprising facts about Cape Town:

1. Let’s start with the name, Cape Town is nicknamed the ‘Mother City’

There are a number of suggested reasons by Cape Town is known as the Mother City. One of which is that it was hailed the mother city due to it being one of the first European settlements on the continent. Another suggestion is that in the 1930, a local newspaper referred to it as a ‘metropolis’ which is derived from the Greek words ‘metros’ (mother) and ‘polis’ (city) which the public enjoyed so much they used the description as a nickname.

Cape Town is also known as the Cape of Good Hope and was, at one point in history, known as the Cape of Storms.

2. Table Mountain is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature

Excitingly, Cape Town’s iconic landmark is officially one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature! The mountain has its name due to its flat-topped shape and the clouds that settle across the mountain when the wind blows in a certain direction are known as the ‘table cloth’. Even more interestingly, the indigenous Khoisan people named it ‘Hoerikwaggo’ meaning ‘mountain in the sea’ which is an absolutely spot on description when you see it in person, too.

Besides its notable shape and name, another well-known aspect of Table Mountain is the cableway. The first cableway to the top opened on 4 October 1929 with the earliest cable cars carrying up to 25 people. The faster, rotating cable cars that we are familiar with today were first installed in 1997, with upgrades made consistently over the years. Nowadays, you can travel from the lower cable car station to the top in +-5 minutes, enjoying a 360 degree view as you go!

3. The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest colonial-era building in the country

Located on the corner of Darling Street and Buitenkant Street is the Castle of Good Hope. It was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679 and today is the oldest colonial-era building in the country. You can visit the castle to enjoy tours, see the military museum, admire the African Pottery Collection and even do a tunnel and dungeon tour!

4. Company’s Garden is the oldest garden in South Africa

While it began as a humble vegetable patch centuries ago, today, Company’s Garden is a gorgeous green oasis nestled in the heart of the city centre. It’s also the oldest garden in the country! It’s home to centuries-old plants, including the country’s oldest cultivated pear tree which was planted around 1652. Today, Company’s Garden is home to cultivated gardens filled with indigenous plants and local fauna. Plus, you get incredible views of Table Mountain. It’s a spot locals love to visit during the week to escape the hustle and bustle of the working city, as well as on the weekend to slow down and embrace nature.

5. The city is partly built over the sea

This may sound like an odd one but the geography of Cape Town is not the original lay out. In the 1940s, land claimed from the Atlantic Ocean was developed into Cape Town’s foreshore. Everything beyond Strand Street in this area used to be the ocean! It was built upon the sea in order to expand the city centre and today you’ll find well known Cape Town landmarks including the CTICC, Artscape and the Civic Centre in this area.

6. You’ll find two UNESCO World Heritage Sites here

This incredible city is home to not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites! The first to be inscribed in 1999 was Robben Island. This island is renowned for housing political prisoners during the apartheid years, the most famous of which was Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned here for 18 of the total years he spent being jailed by the apartheid government. Today, it is no longer an operating prison and people can tour the historic island. Catch a boat across the stretch of ocean, arrive and see the prison building including Mandela’s cell, the limestone quarry and more sites of note.

The second of Cape Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites is the Cape Floral Region which was inscribed on the list in 2004. The region is one of the most biodiverse in the entire world with fynbos vegetation being completely unique to the region. Seeing the beautiful indigenous natural scenery is a must for anyone in Cape Town!

7. Signal Hills is home to the Noon Gun

Find yourself in the city centre around lunchtime? You’ll likely hear the boom of the Noon Gun echoing around the city bowl! The Noon Gun has been a historic time symbol in Cape Town since 1806 and is one of the city’s oldest living traditions. Located on Signal Hill, the pair of guns (one is a backup) are maintained by the South African Navy and fire everyday at 12pm (except Sundays and Public Holidays) to mark the time.

If you’d like to visit, the area is open for visitors around the time the gun is fired with a short presentation conducted beforehand while the gun is loaded.

8. Cape Town is one of the three capitals of South Africa

This is a fact many South Africans will already know: South Africa boasts three capital cities versus the regular old singular capital city that many countries have. The other two are Pretoria and Bloemfontein. “Why three?” you may ask. The reason is that there is one for each branch of the government; Cape Town is the legislative capital and the official seat of Parliament, Pretoria is the executive branch and official seat of the Cabinet, while Bloemfontein is the judicial branch and home to the Supreme Court of South Africa.

9. Cape Town’s first bottle of wine was produced in 1659

Hundreds of years ago, the first Dutch Settlers arrived in the Cape and one of the things they brought with them that still hangs around today, is wine. The first bottle was harvested and produced by Jan van Riebeck, Cape Town’s governor back then. In the following decades, vineyards were planted in Constantia and the nearby Cape Winelands, and both blossomed enormously. Today, the Cape Winelands and Constantia are home to a highly impressive amount of award-winning wine estates!

10. Cape Town is also the start/end of the longest wine route in the world

Amongst many wonderful accolades, South Africa also holds the title of being home to the world’s longest wine route. Route 62 is +-850km long and stretches from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, winding through the Cape Winelands and Klein Karoo, connecting the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape. Meander along Route 62 for a road trip filled with dramatic scenery, charming towns and, of course, fabulous wine!

Go whale watching

June to November is whale watching season in the Western Cape. At this time of year, pods of Southern Right whales embark on their annual migration past this beautiful stretch of South African coastline. The magnificent creatures arrive along the coast to calve and nurse their young. This is prime time for those of us on land to grab the chance to view the whales breaching and spouting in the ocean waters.

Some of the best places to go whale watching include Hermanus (a 90-minute drive from Cape Town), Cape Agulhas (also reachable as a day trip from Cape Town) and the West Coast which is home to numerous small towns which offer perfect city breaks. If you find yourself closer to town, False Bay offers the best chance to spot whales on the ocean waves. If you’re lucky, on the odd occasion, you may even spot a whale swimming through the waters of the V&A harbour!

Top tip: Whale activity usually reaches its peak during September.

Looking for something that will get the adrenalin pumping? Winter is also a prime time for shark cage diving. Gansbaai is Cape Town’s most well-known shark cage diving destination and shark activity peaks between May and September.

The benefits of being a digital nomad in 2023

‘Digital nomad’ is a term many of us will have heard over the last few years. To be a digital nomad means you enjoy the incredible joy of traveling to experience more of the world, without quitting your day job. A digital nomad is someone who works remotely and lives in various locations around the globe. This sounds like a dream for a lot of us, right? Right! In addition to seeing more of the world, there are a number of other benefits to being a digital nomad in 2023.

Digital Nomad

First things first, what is a digital nomad?

While not everybody’s job allows the flexibility to work as a digital nomad, quite a few do!
Actually, more than a few. In 2023, it’s estimated that there are 35 million+ digital nomads working around the world. Whether you are self-employed or work for a company, you’ll often find digital nomads working in the e-commerce, web development and gig economy industries - anything that only requires a strong internet connection vs. needing to be in an office regularly. As the world has recovered after years of Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns, we have seen digital nomads emerge as work and travel trends that are increasing in popularity in 2023, topping lists of travel trends for this year.

The digital nomad lifestyle is different from remote work, hybrid working and workcations because being a digital nomad involves long term travel. If you have the right work set up, the flexibility with regards to responsibility and dependencies, and an adventurous spirit, being a digital nomad is one of the most enriching things you can experience in life! Read on to find out more!

Digital Nomad Working

These are the top 5 benefits of being a digital nomad in 2023:

1. Productivity, Performance & Positivity

They say change is as good as a holiday right? Well, a change in scenery can leave you feeling refreshed and motivated! This in turn leads to improved productivity. Apply this to your work life and see a boost in productivity and performance. In the same vein, a monotonous daily life can lead to exhaustion and apathy which in turn reduces productivity and positivity. When you live the digital nomad lifestyle, the added excitement of travelling to new destinations can motivate you to be more productive because you’re in a space that brings positivity and joy.

Some people may worry that a lack of a regular work set up may reduce productivity due to distractions. However, one of the most important things when you’re a digital nomad is selfdiscipline. You need to be committed to putting in your necessary work hours following which you can switch off and set out to enjoy your new surroundings! Additionally, the prospect of getting out and exploring before or after your working day is a huge motivator.

Top travel tip: Being a digital nomad in a beautiful city like Cape Town, which is home to incredible outdoor areas, culinary destinations, wine farms and nightlife, will mean you’re never short on things to see or experience!

Table Mountain

While digital nomad-ing, you’ll most likely feel invigorated with a new sense of purpose and energy. This newly-found energy can improve not only your performance at work but positivity in all facets of your day!

2. A Better Work-Life Balance - with Freedom & Flexibility

While it may feel counterproductive to work while travelling, digital nomading provides the chance to enjoy the best of both worlds! You get to focus during your work hours and fully embrace travel mode outside of those hours! Many of us can be tempted to check an email or complete a task outside of specified hours. 4. Reduce Burnout & Daily Stress

Studies show that people with work routines that have a lack of balance (at a minimum) and, at worst, no breaks, can cause chronic stress. This can ultimately lead us to burnout. No one can operate at full capacity without periods of rest and rejuvenation. However, another problem is that many people may worry about falling behind on tasks or missing deadlines. That’s why being a digital nomad is a fantastic option for many people! You get to fit in your work hours while enjoying the benefits of travel, exploration and rejuvenation.

While being a digital nomad is different from a workcation. It still offers the opportunity to relax and unwind in a place that is separate from your usual routine. Day-to-day work routines can come with a significant amount of stress. Whether it’s the stress of a commute, office politics or finding time for household chores, these stressors can build up over time and wear down our energy and spirit. This makes getting away from everyday routine highly important! Take a break from the norm and visit a new and exciting place in 2023.

Cape Town is a great option for digital nomads because it’s budget-friendly and well connected, the weather is great almost year-round and the region is home to world-class hospitality, restaurants and travel destinations!

Travel is good for the soul

5. Personal Development

As a digital nomad, you’ll get to see more of the world, get to know other cultures, build on your life experiences and expand your horizons! It’s the ultimate way to boost your personal development. When we find ourselves in new and foreign places, we test our limits, push ourselves out of our comfort zones and ultimately grow as people.

It’s also a chance to meet new people; you could meet your new best friends or the love of your life! Additionally, the lifestyle offers the chance to pursue new hobbies and interests that you might not be able to in your current hometown. Kantien: A must-see cool, new eatery in Stellies

Tucked away on Papegaai Street in Stellenboach is a brand new restaurant, courtesy of South African chef and restauranteur Bertus Basson. Many of us will recognise Basson’s name in connection to fine dining destinations such as Overture, Eike, CHORUS at Waterkloof Wine Estate and casual eateries Die Vrije Burger and The Deck. In February 2023, Kantien became the latest addition to Basson’s impressive group of restaurants!

This blog writer was lucky enough to grab a spot for lunch on Kantien’s first full day in operation. Read on to find out more about Stellenbosch’s latest must-visit restaurant.

What is Kantien?

Kantien is the newest establishment to join Basson’s growing list of incredible restaurants. While Basson has been at the helm of several fine dining destinations, Kantien is a laid-back, casual eatery - perfect for a relaxed meal in a lovely, chilled-out setting. You can dine in or order takeaway. The casual spot is inspired by biker bars and motorbikes, skull designs and leather accents tastefully come together in the decor to create a cool, vibey atmosphere. It’s laid-back rock n’ roll!

Kantien Table

Where is Kantien?

You’ll find Kantien on 6 Papegaai Street in Stellenbosch. Located in a historic building just off Dorp Street, Kantien is situated right next to Eike, one of Basson’s most famous restaurants. This is also the location of Parkeer - Basson’s pop-up pizza stop that sets up shop in the Eike parking lot every Friday and Saturday.

Stellenbosch is a scenic university town in the Cape Winelands. Surrounded by dramatic mountains and dozens of beautiful wine farms, “Stellies”, as it's known by locals, is a truly picturesque destination. It also boasts an impressive culinary scene and Kantien is the latest must-see foodie spot! Papegaai Street is located near the centre of town - just far away enough from the hustle and bustle that you can genuinely sit back and relax with a cold beer and a pizza hot out of the oven.

Kantien Food

What kind of food is on the menu?

While neighbouring Eike is all about elevated, nostalgic and indulgent South African dishes, Kantien spins this approach into everyday eats that pack a punch with flavour. Think pizzas, chicken “sandos”, burgers, crispy squid, salads, tater tots and (drumroll please) smoked provolone cheese that will have your mouth watering. There are also dessert options as well as a variety of local wines and beers on the menu too.

Kantien Pizza

What can I expect from a visit to Kantien?

You can expect a relaxed atmosphere and delicious food! From the moment you walk up the street to Kantien, you immediately feel the vibe.

Arriving at Kantien, motorbikes line the pavement outside the restaurant. Patrons donned sunglasses and sipped cool beers while relaxing on the outside seating, perusing the menus. The waitstaff helpfully fit us in and sat us at a table outside (despite our group not having a lunch booking) and we excitedly checked out the menu.

You can look forward to simple, elevated, wholesome and (obviously) delicious dishes. Staying true to its laid-back vibe, Kantien’s menu is not elaborate or long-winded. You’ll find a couple of snacks, large plates and pizzas listed. Our group ordered a few snacks, sharing plates and a pizza. The grilled chicken sando (burger) and tater tots were incredibly tasty while ‘Die Ouma’ pizza is a unique adventure for the taste buds with toppings made up of pickled ox tongue, slap hakskeentjies (sweet and sour onions) and nasturtium (edible flowers) - this “simple” pizza was nowhere near simple! Finally, the most popular dish of the day was the smoked provolone (Italian cheese) with chilli and honey. Served bubbling hot, straight from the oven in a mini iron skillet, and accompanied by freshly baked bread, this was the unexpected favourite of the day for the group!

Kantien Burger

Best time to visit and do I need to book?

Kantien is open for lunch and dinner, from Tuesday to Saturday between 12 pm and 8 pm. If you’re looking for a laid-back destination, a relaxed vibe and dishes that are bursting with flavour, Kantien is the place to be. It’s great for everyone; friends, dates, and even families with kids who are keen to try familiar-food-with-a-twist. Booking a table is always a great idea - bookings can be made via email kantien@bertusbasson.com or by phone 071 1383991. If you’re a cheese fan, be sure to add the smoked provolone to your order!

Kantien Venue

From Stellenbosch to Franschhoek and Paarl, the Cape Winelands is a culinary destination of note with numerous incredible food and wine venues just waiting to be explored. Kantien is the latest must-see in the Cape Winelands so be sure to add it to your foodie bucket list during your next trip to Stellenbosch. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a laid-back, delicious meal!

The Best Health & Wellness Activities in Cape Town in 2023

One of the biggest global trends for 2023 is health and wellness. After nearly 3 years of pandemics, lockdowns, restrictions and stress in general, more and more people are recognising the importance of looking after their bodies and minds.

With many of us experiencing months of fatigue and burnout with little to no relief, there is a huge surge in people seeking opportunities to relax, refocus, rejuvenate weary bones and feel soul-stirring experiences in 2023. The great news is that Cape Town is a fantastic destination to do just this! From yoga sessions and wellness retreats to relaxing spa days and mindful time spent surrounded by stunning scenery, Cape Town offers it all in a gorgeous setting!

Camps Bay

Take a look at these health and wellness activities that you can enjoy in and around Cape Town in 2023:

Spa Day

A day at the spa is a classic “treat yourself” experience. It’s a chance to completely relax with several treatments that are sure to rejuvenate your body. A day at the spa also gives you a chance to completely switch off for a few hours and disconnect from the everyday stresses of life. Cape Town offers a number of world-class spas and wellness retreats. Better yet, these spas are located in truly stunning locations! From the slopes of Table Mountain to the rolling vineyards of the Cape Winelands.

Spas at hotels including the One&Only, Amani Spa at the Radisson Blu, Librisa Spa at the Mount Nelson, the Cape Grace and more in Cape Town offer enticing treatments and day packages, while further outside of the city in the Cape Winelands you can enjoy a relaxing day out at Babylonstoren, Mangwanani, Majeka House, Lanzerac Spa and more!

Hot Stone Massage

Yoga

When people think of health and wellness, yoga is probably one of the first things that spring to mind. Yoga is a combination of physical, mental and spiritual practices that, when practised regularly, greatly improve both fitness and mental health. Yoga has a history reaching back millennia and today it is practised globally both as part of religion and as a general wellness activity.

Practice your best downward dog, flow through a Sun Salutation, relax into a Shavasana and more at private yoga studios around Cape Town. Yogalife, Hot Dog Yoga, The Shala and AWAKE Yoga studio are a few great options.

Be sure to keep an eye out for outdoor yoga events around the city - you’ll most likely find these events advertised on Facebook and Instagram. You could even try out SUP (Stand Up Paddle Boarding) yoga in the city at the V&A Waterfront’s canals or at Clifton and Camps Bay beaches!

Yoga Camps Bay

Meditation

Meditation is another classic health and wellness activity. As a practice, meditation is the act of clearing and calming your mind using a combination of mental and physical techniques. Managing anxiety, reducing stress and lowering blood pressure are just some of the incredible benefits of regular mindful meditation. It’s all about finding your “zen”!

While it is pretty simple to practice meditation at home or solo in a beautiful outdoor area, many people enjoy community-led meditation. Join a meditation class and practice spirituality at several spots around the city. Shambala South Africa, The Art of Living, Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Centre, and Yoga Life are some wonderful options.

Meditation

Wellness Festivals

You could also enjoy time away at a wellness festival! Events like Retreat Yourself offer people the chance to embrace wellness for a weekend in a beautiful location! Activities include yoga, meditation, pilates, movement classes, dance and soul-stirring activities like Talk Circles, combined with champagne brunches, cooking masterclasses and experiential bars!

Wellness Festival

Fitness

Staying active is a huge part of staying healthy! And Cape Town offers countless opportunities to get active in a number of exciting ways.

Join a local gym where you can use the equipment and facilities that cover a range of fitness areas including weights and cardio as well as sports-specific facilities such as spinning, tennis, volleyball and squash. You can also join the classes and enjoy instructor-led sessions! Virgin Active and Planet Fitness are two big names with several locations in the wider Cape Town area. Alternatively, join niche gyms that focus on specific sports like Brazilian Ju Jitsu, MMA, Karate and more.

Another popular activity in Cape Town is rock climbing. You can do this outdoors or in one of the city’s climbing gyms such as Block11 or CityROCK.

Rock Climbing

One of the best things about Cape Town is the natural scenery. So, combining staying fit and getting active with the chance to experience Cape Town’s natural scenery is unbeatable! There are several excellent outdoor fitness activities to enjoy including hikes, trail runs, cycling and mountain biking. For something at a slower pace, why not enjoy some of the beautiful nature walks in national parks and mountains located around the peninsula and the along the West Coast? Kirstenbosch National Park, Silvermine Nature Reserve and West Coast National Park are three excellent options. Be sure to slow down and “smell the roses” while you’re at it!

Love the water? Get active on and in the cool ocean waves surrounding the city. Grab a paddle and hit the waves when you go sea kayaking. Cruise the waves while enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and breathtaking views of the shoreline and the horizon. Plus, you’ll get the chance to catch glimpses of local marine life including dolphins, seals, sunfish and even penguins! Get an even closer look at life beneath the waves when you go snorkelling (one of the best places to do this is Hout Bay!) and scuba diving which is also popular around the Southern Peninsula.

Alternatively, keep it simple with a cold water swim! It’s widely known that Cape Town’s oceans are not always the warmest… but the good news is that taking a dip in cold water has a number of health benefits! These mental and physical benefits include improving your circulation, exercising all your muscle groups, and burning more calories (when compared to swimming in warmer water - this is thanks to the shivering!). It also reduces stress and encourages the release of endorphins also known as a “cold water high!” Additionally, joining a swimming group or community also encourages making more friends and building relationships - these are all things that boost our mental health. So why not take a leap into the chilly water this year?

Paddling

In Cape Town, whatever you’re doing, simply make sure you’re moving and being mindful to experience a positive impact on your health and wellness in 2023!
