In this post, we share some thrilling, yet unique coastal experiences, from eco-conscious shark cage diving experiences to incredible Cape kelp forest trails, that our DK Villas guests can enjoy in and around Hout Bay, and indeed the False Bay coastline, when they stay with us.
Shark Cage Diving in Simon’s Town

While Gansbaai is famed for its shark cage diving, there is also surprisingly great shark cage diving to be enjoyed in Simon’s Town. One such shark cage diving business is family-run African Shark Eco-Charters, which was first established in 1996.
They are not only the leading shark cage diving operator in False Bay but perhaps more importantly, they have a “first do no harm” philosophy that permeates every aspect of their operations.
Trips only take place in suitable weather conditions (to ensure everyone’s safety) and because they offer small, immersive experiences, guests can really witness the sharks in their natural habitat and see them engage in normal wild interactions too.
Each trip can only take a maximum of 12 guests; this ensures a personal, intimate experiencel with these underwater giants.

Explore the Peninsula’s Water Wonders with Cape Kelp Forest Trail
Cape Town’s Cape Kelp Forest is a vulnerable and entirely amazing part of our coastal life, yet it is sorely unfamiliar to most locals and tourists alike.
Now, though, with the help of the Cape Kelp Forest Trail, guests get to unlock a range of artistic or educational experiences that can help educate them on this underwater wonder.
Trail experiences include exploring the kelp forest, learning about cultural heritage and how closely it is tied to our environment, discovering research-based conservation efforts and even meeting the brave guardians of the deep who are desperately and passionately protecting this rare coastal habitat.
From Puppet Planet-run stories and ocean-themed exhibits at the Iziko South African Museum to freeing self-guided snorkelling at Oudekraal or even a colourful kelp mural viewing at the end of Lighthouse Road, Kommetjie, there is so much for young and old to discover as they follow this route.

Visit One of Our Beautiful Harbours
While many of our little coastal towns and villages offer quaint harbours, two rather iconic, cheerful harbours to explore include Kalk Bay and Hout Bay Harbour.
They are so different in nature, as well as look and feel but both offer guests and visitors a unique glimpse into harbour workings, a taste of nearby eateries and a host of fun experiences waiting to be savoured!
For example, if you visit our very own, much beloved Hout Bay Harbour, you can grab some fresh seafood or tasty fish and chips, visit pretty Hout Bay beach or even take a cruise out to Duiker Island (also fondly called Seal Island).
Best of all, both harbours are home to a beautiful array of yachts and fishing boats that add to their innate coastal charm.
