If ever there was a city that excels in summer, it’s the Mother City. Known for its gorgeous outdoor landscapes (from secret forests to scenic hikes), stunning, clean beaches and lovely cafes and restaurants, Cape Town offers so much for locals and visitors to enjoy in its blustery, yet balmy summer.
One such experience is the city’s magical tidal pools, which allow you to feel like a real-life mermaid or merman for a while.
In this post, we share some of the best tidal pools to explore in Cape Town.
Maiden’s Cove, Camps Bay

One of the city’s most iconic and well-known tidal pools is found at Maiden’s Cove. Surrounded by safe, peaceful picnic- and braai-areas and blessed with incredible views of the icy Atlantic, Lion’s Head, the Twelve Apostles mountain range and some of Camps Bay’s legendary settings, this tidal pool is well-known and equally well loved for a good reason.
There are actually two tidal pools here, one is smaller and better suited to children or nervous swimmers, while the larger pool makes for good, deeper dips.
Not only is Maiden’s Cove hugely family-friendly but it also makes for a great place for a photo shoot, especially at golden hour.
St James Tidal Pool, between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay
One of Cape Town’s most famous and memorable tidal pools is the family-friendly St James Tidal Pool. Situated below the St James Station, between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, this False Bay-lying tidal pool is as eye-catching as it is iconic.
Nearby, one can also enjoy cosy cafes and bakeries, perfect for a pre- or post-swim outing.
With famous Victorian-style beach huts, a beautiful, sheltered beach and some memorable views, St James tidal pool is beloved for so many good reasons!
Woolley’s Tidal Pool
Another False Bay gem is the lesser known but no less fabulous, Woolley’s (often also spelt Wooley’s) Tidal Pool. In fact, this might just be one of the city’s most tranquil swimming spots. Woolley’s tidal pool is situated below the road between Kalk Bay and Clovelly.
Here, kiddies can splash and play in the shallow end, while confident swimmers might enjoy taking a deeper dive as the pool is divided into two distinct sections. What’s more, the pool also offers great views of the False Bay coastline.

Another beauty of a tidal pool is found within the majestic Cape Point Nature Reserve, close to Simon’s Town. Surrounded by imposing mountains, fynbos and some incredible ocean stretches, the Buffels Bay tidal pool is scenic and exciting!
There are technically two pools located next to each other. One is completely natural, while the other is manmade. Still, both have their own kind of beauty and offer amazing False Bay views.
Above the pools, you will find some flowing lawns and nearby picnic- and braai-spots that are perfect for a family day out.
It’s one of the city’s most remote tidal pool locations, although you do have to pay to enjoy this pool as it is located within the national park.
