In the early 1930’s, on a visit to Cape Town, Pole Hans Mickeleit fell in love with the fishing village of Hout Bay and made immediate plans to relocate his family. Here, Hans bought an old bus, which he parked at the end of Harbour Road, and started a humble fish and chips takeaway restaurant, which catered mainly for the fishermen. His Polish-inspired smoked snoek did especially well, which inspired the name of his café.
