Let’s be honest. It’s been a pretty sh*t year, especially for those in the tourism and hospitality business. But rather than bemoan fate, the team here at dk villas decided to do what millions of people around the world do when they’re feeling glum: we indulged in a little retail therapy. Except, instead of buying new shoes, jewellery, or a car…we bought an apartment!
That’s right, the dk villas family is growing by another member and we’re proud to present to you the fourth jewel in our crown: our one-bedroom, one bathroom apartment at River View, Hout Bay.
Introducing dk villas # 4
River View is the perfect home-away-from-home for a single traveller or a couple. While it’s yet to receive the “dk villa” treatment (a full design overhaul and refurbishment), its bones are strong and location ideal. The lounge and kitchen are open plan with a stunning view out onto a spacious patio and Hout Bay’s dramatic mountainscape as a backdrop. Framing this drama is a bougainvillea, which bursts gaudily into bloom for most of the year.
In terms of the interior design inspiration, Petra de Kock, who is the visionary behind dk villas’ trademark style, said this: “French flair, a touch rustic, with earthy tones – a very relaxing atmosphere!” Petra and her husband and business partner Johann have already begun the fun task of furniture shopping for the new luxury apartment.
And finally, the cherry on top: the complex has a communal pool, which guests will find a real boon in the hotter summer months (given that the nearby Atlantic Ocean at Hout Bay beach is toe-numbingly cold all year round).
Things to do and see in Hout Bay
With dk villas’ River View apartment being located a short stone’s throw from Hout Bay’s main road and beach, you could scarcely find a more convenient location from which to explore the treasures of this historic valley.
For starters, right across the road, there’s (in our opinion) the very BEST authentic Italian gelato you’ll find in the entire city, if not the country (at “Ice Dream”). Then, there’s Hout Bay beach, a long stretch of sugary white sand embraced on either side by striking mountain scenery: the world famous Chapman’s Peak to the east and the Sentinel to the west.
The harbour area itself is the beating heart of this historic fishing village and there are plenty of restaurants, fish and chip shops, and local arts and crafts markets to explore. But if it’s the bracing sea air you’re after, the harbour’s piers are long and accessible…just keep a respectful distance from the sea lions that like to hang out there!
This is just the tip of the ice berg: Hout Bay’s harbour market has become a huge, city-wide hit with locals and tourists alike; and there’s a gin distillery AND a brewery right next door. But if you’re more of a wine person, Hout Bay has a couple of wineries to experience (Hout Bay Vineyards, for example) and the nearby historic Constantia wine route, which has 10 wine farms.
Back in Hout Bay, there’s no shortage of fabulous restaurants to dine at, from the cheap and casual takeaway joints to the absolutely legendary La Colombe, which has been voted amongst the world’s 50 best restaurants for several years!
On re-opening after COVID-19
As Johann de Kock says: “The best view comes after the hardest climb.”
COVID-19 brought our tourism industry to a standstill. Dk villas had to be creative to get bookings and while long-term tenants have been an option, we are positive that after all these restrictions, people will want to travel again. And we can’t wait to welcome them back!
“We have always wanted to expand,” explains Johann. “We were just waiting for the right moment. The COVID-19 hard lockdown in South Africa might not have seemed to be that perfect moment but it made us think: what’s the way forward? As they say, the hardest times often lead to the greatest moments of your life. Stay positive – which is definitely something both of us are! And it will be SO worth it in the end!”
Watch this space!
The team here at dk villas is incredibly proud and excited to be adding this fourth property to our luxury accommodation portfolio. And we'll be sure to keep you in the loop as we make progress on the refurbishment and interior design…so watch this space.
Remember: difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations, and certainly Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa is exactly that: a beautiful destination!
