What is The Galileo Open Air Cinema?
The Galileo is an open-air movie screening enjoyed outdoors. Viewers attend in the evening, set up picnic spots and watch a film on a large screen designed specifically for the outdoors. The first season launched 10 years ago and every year since, The Galileo has operated between October and April.
It combines the beauty of the outdoors with a big, outdoor screen set up and the excitement of an evening-time picnic. Featuring amazing venues, screening the best movies and serving delicious food - what’s not to love? Better yet, there are a variety of screenings suitable for all kinds of ages and the venues are wheelchair-friendly. The Galileo is a must for family fun, date nights, friend gatherings or even a solo film-fanatic experience!
This is a fantastic excursion to enjoy when in Cape Town because it combines two activities: movie magic and beautiful settings! The Galileo’s screenings take place at a variety of venues across Cape Town and the surrounds; including the Southern Suburbs and the Cape Winelands.
What to expect from an evening at The Galileo Open Air Cinema
An evening at The Galileo is sure to be filled with films, fun, food and fantastic scenery! Arrive early to secure a spot and enjoy the vibe as the sun sets. Once the sun says farewell, the movie can begin! Snuggle up at your picnic spot and get ready for movie entertainment.
The Galileo Picnic Experience
The Galileo Picnic is the classic outdoor movie experience we know and love. Set up your picnic spot in front of the big screen and enjoy snacks from home or from local artisanal food vendors. There are vegetarian and Halaal options and food stalls include 2 kitchens, Butlers Pizza, Sugar & Pop and Lion Coffee.
Be sure to get there early to secure a great spot. Fill up on food from the local vendor or set up your picnic with treats from home and enjoy the lawn games and vibey atmosphere while you wait for the movie to begin.
*Please note no alcohol is allowed to be brought into venues hosted on wine estates however there are bars available on site at wine estates. You may bring your own food and beverages to all venues other than Blaauwklippen Wine Estate and Plaisir Wine Estate. These two venues have excellent markets on site. Cash is preferred but there will be card facilities on site.
The Galileo Royale Experience
Feel like royalty for the evening! On the first Wednesday of every month, you can book tickets to The Galileo Royale. Look forward to an outdoor movie experience at exclusive Cape Town venues. You’ll get a welcome drink, canapé, popcorn and even a gift upon arrival! Top it off with live music before the film and it's sure to be an unforgettable evening! While no food or beverages may be brought into Royale venues, the restaurant at the venue will have a selection of meals and drinks available.
What about tickets?
There are several options for tickets ranging from R109 - R195. Pick which suits you best!
A Standard picnic ticket costs R109 per person and includes entry. A Comfy ticket costs R125 and includes entry and a backrest. A Warm & Comfy ticket costs R130 and includes entry, a backrest and a blanket. A VIP ticket costs R195 and includes entry, a backrest, a blanket, a drink, chocolate and popcorn. Galileo Royale tickets cost R290 per person and include a live music performance, the movie, backrest, a blanket, a welcome drink, an appetizer and popcorn.
Doors open at either 5pm or 6pm depending on the location and the movie starts when the sun sets. Please note screenings are weather dependent.
